Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

The board that folds up/velcroes (velcros?) to the 2nd row of seats has seen better days.

Specifically, that little tab of velcro that keeps it attached to the 2nd row seat is just about shot. Every time I strap it up, it sags and falls within a few miles, then rattles around. Very annoying.

I know I can probably rig some sort of solution, (like try to replace the velcro... DUH!) but I decided to see if anyone else here had a whiz-bang solution before I dedicated any serious thought to it.

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

I've been thinking about using the same connector arrangement that was in my old 1999 Expedition. When folded, you just pressed a button on the back and they locked in place. To unlock, you did the same thing. They were very secure. When I checked the seats out, it looked like it would require removing the seat back upholstery, so I have put this on the back burner until sometime in May.

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

I took mine into the dealer when it was still under warranty and they sent it out to the upholstery shop. The service writer said that they get lots of complaints about it. The shop sewed on the tab in a different place instead of the current location and it took the "slack" out of it. Haven't had any problems since.....

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

I had a neighbor sew on new ones, the problem with a latch for me was it stuck up and would be broken off if I slid a sheet of plywood in, or not sit flat. You can also.....very carefuly....use a lighter to burn all the extra fuz off the tab, that was in the way of the hook and loops. They are a joke, I leave them down, just don't kneel on them, they as are weak as the front springs.

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

Been there done that on my old 95 Suburban.

When I first got my Ex I thought the velcro setup sucked but then quickly remembered that the clips on the Sub have been broken almost since day one from sliding things into the back.

By the way, it's called a 'closeout panel'.

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

Back board thingy, I knew exactly what you meant instantly. Closeout panel ,but anyway, Sometimes you can rejuvenate velcro by combing the debris from it. I have used a toothpic or a blunted piece of steel wire and just combed thru the rows of hooks then shot the loop side with compressed air. My driverside "thingy" just recently started falling after 4 years and 100k. The hook side was full of lint and hair from my long haired teenage daughter and my Rough Collie. Spent about five minutes combing the hook side with a toothpic and a little light brushing with a fine bristle brass brush and it's much better now. I think beside removing the debris, the cleaning/combing also makes the hooks stand back up.

Good luck rejuvenating your "thingy" errrr "closeout panel"

Jeff

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

New to Diesel Stop. I used a dose of superglue to reattach my velcro. No more problems...

Re: Back "board thingy" on 2nd row seat.

The velcro on my "board thingy" never lined up correctly (was at least an inche or two off) so the board was always falling. Took it to the dealer at 200 miles and they wanted to remove the rear seat and replace the leather, etc. I said no way (figured I could do it myself and it would turn out better). I bought some of the adhesive back velcro and sewed some on the little flap thingy (just a few puncture wounds in my thumb; that carpet stuff is thick) and it works great.

It has been working now for 6000 miles, only falls when the kids kick it!
