For those still riding on Firestones, have you had any problems? The only problem I've had, is the white letters peelng off(14k miles). Not just on curb side, but all.
Went to Firestone Store(company owned). They offered me at $250 customer satisfaction discount toward a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T's 285's. They wanted 139.99 per tire plus mounting, balancing, etc. out the door would be $395 after all said and done. My feelings are to knock the 10% extra off tires that Firestone is offering on Dueler's until 4/15 and waive the mounting and balancing. Should be out the door for about $265 with tax.
Anyone put some miles on the Bridgestone's? What do you think?
Firestone and Bridgestone are parent companies and the tire quality is the same at the same price point. Most Superduty pickups come with E (10PR)rated Firestone tires. As long as the tire pressure is up to load rated specs (Max.65psi D,80psi E)there should be no problem with Firestones on trucks built at the Kentucky SuperDuty assembly plant. I will switch to BFG AT KO's when my Firestone wear out.I have them on my 1997 ZR2 S-10 4x4 pickup.
Remarkable timing. I just had my tires rotated and balanced this afternoon at MTB. After I got home, I decided to find my tread depth gauge and measure how my tires are wearing. I have 24410 miles on my tires. I rotate and balance every 5K miles when I change my oil. I was surprised that each tire had even tread wear at 12/32". My lettering is still intact.
I forgot to measure the spare to see how much I started with. Maybe someone can let me know. So far I can't complain about these tires.
Also, Do the front brakes ever wear down on these trucks? Mine are still good as new (well almost). Usually with such a heavy vehicle, I would expect to be getting ready to replace them. Again, very impressed with my truck.

Well guys, the SteelTex tires are coming under fire today if you haven't heard. Apparently a lot of Emergency Response Departments (i.e. Fire, Ambulance, etc.) around the country are complaining that there have been significant tread separation problems on their emergency vehicles (SteelTex in particular).
Those prices for the Bridgestones are TERRIBLE...you can get BF Goodrich for that price (and BF Goodrich is made identical to Michelins...they're owned by them).
I would say, "Give me a check for $200" and then go get some BFGs.
When I bought my X, I took it to Don Olsen and they swapped me the Firestones for Bridgestones (Dueler AT 285) for $20 a tire. Last month, I sold them back for $50 a tire and bought the BFGs (315x75x16) for $750 total installed. The BFGs are MUCH better.

If I read your sig correctly, you have 315x75x16 tires without using a lift.
If this is true, did you mount these tires on the stock wheels or some aftermarket wheels?
If on aftermarket wheels, what size?
And, now for the killer question...
What, if you don't have a lift, is the max height of your Excursion.
(Wanted a lift until I found out it would cost $11,500, i.e., $1,500 for the lift and $10,000 to remodel the garage door to fit the higher Excursion. Ratz.)
I have the stock 265 Firestone Steeltex's on my X. Have 22,000 miles on them, been rotating them regularly, and they are going to last another 22,000 easily. I am very impressed with the wear on these tires. The white lettering is still all there, even as we come to an end of the Minnesota winter and its accompanying salted roads.
I'm a fan of the BFG AT's and will get a set of those once these tires are worn down to nothing. Not out of fear that the tread will separate from these tires, just because I prefer to have an All Terrain tire like the BFG. Fortunately I don't venture offroad at all so the worst these Firestones see is the snow.
I just checked summitracing.com found 285 x 75 tires however they are recommended for 7.5 inch wheels or wider. Any problem mounting them on 7 inch? Also, does it throw off shift of auto transmission. These do not require lift do they? I found Michelins at Sams in a 275 x 70 which would be about same heighth as 265 but wider.
erlong, I had the same thought when I bought my new 91 explorer. The problem was that the tread outlasts the tire. One of my 'stones caused a vibration I lived with for about four years. Next were the cracks forming around the white letters (all 4). I bought a set of Michelins on sale, and put 'em in the garage until the stones wore out. 35,000 miles later, one tire almost went flat without any visible signs of puncture. That's it, off they went after 135,000 miles. (The Michelins lasted 160,000 miles) The truck now has 316,000 miles and counting. The moral/s? You'll have to live with the stones a long time before they wear out. There's a good chance that you will experience some kind of other failure before the tread wears out. Keep a close eye on 'em.

I think you hit it right. The Steeltex are made for commercial use and longevity is important. The problem is the tread outlasts the side wall or support of the tire. I'm sure many of the failures are due to underinflation or heat, but most other tires will survive this longer than stones.
I hear many on this site say how well the BFG's take abuse(airing down, hitting objects etc). These types of abuse will surely make the Steeltex fail. About all you can do is watch these tires closely and replace them when the time is right.
Other Firestones I've had on Fords, I've always replaced after 20k miles, just never had good luck with them, always thought of them as a second rate tire. This will date me, but I remember my brother having problems with the wide ovals on a 65 Mustang. Firestone has always had a problem tire. So, might has well bag the Bridgestone idea and cough up the bucks for the BFG's or Michelin's and shut up.
I had a rear blowout at 280 miles. I want to replace before I start towing. I would like to find a wider same height tire that will fit the factory alloys
