I've had the 80 HP econo DP Tune on my Ex for about a month. I haven't had a chance to really compare city driving but on the highway, before the DP Tuner, I was getting 23.5-24.5 MPG. After the DP Tuner I am getting 28.5-29.0 highway.
Of course, these numbers are according to the fuel mileage indicator in the overhead console, and are based on a speed of 55 MPH.

Try hand calculating it. The overhead is not completely accurate, especially if your tires size is larger than 285/75/16's. There's been many posts on this web site about this subject.

I realize it is not completely accurate. That is why I stated that it was based on the overhead console readout. But it has to be somewhat relative to all the other Ford products (Excursion, SuperDuty, etc., with stock tires) readouts, does it not? And if it is relative to the actual MPG, wouldn't that mean that I am getting 5 MPG greater than I was before?

I'm only running OEM size tires.
I was following you about the over head console that's why I suggested hand calculating. Remember, the X is a 4 ton vehicle, just a little heavier than your typical Super Duty truck. When someone says I get 28.5mpg, I'm think'in "so you say your get 1,254 miles to a tank of fuel?" I think the most I've ever gotten was a little more than 800 miles and that's rare and only if it's a long flat freeway road trip.
Next time your driving, set your overhead console to read how many miles you have until your next fill up. Watch the reading at around 150 miles or less left to go. It will start taken a nose dive. At below 60 miles it looks like your getting about 8 miles to a gallon. The computer is nice and I use it too but again, it's not really that accurate. Just like the dummy temp gauges on your dash. They do the job but if you want accurate readings most add a pillar mount with better gauges.

With ULSD BFG AT KO 285's and a ScanGauge , I'm averaging hand calculated 21 MPG on a 2001 7.3L PSD when I'm not towing. Yanking my little John Deere and equipment around drops it to roughly 14 MPG. I love my BFG KO 285's but they do rob a little bit of fuel.
On flatland interstates with no momentum assist, I keep it at 60MPH. (Yeah, I live in the granny lane) Up steep hills I let it drop to 55 MPG. On the downhill side I'll let it build up to 65MPH especially when there's an uphill on the other side to take advantage of momentum. Boost never gets higher than 4 PSI and EGT stays below 600 degrees. The ScanGauge has taught me where the "sweetspot" is for wringing extra MPG's out of every gallon. I use the tricks learned driving a big rig like using momentum and progressive shifting. Note that progressive shifting works a whole lot better on a manual, but you can use it somewhat on an auto.
Anyone else using a ScanGauge to help bring up the MPG's?
I am running 33's too, bfg's, and I wonder how much mileage I am losing because of it. My edge evolution with the BD calibrations is on its way and I am excited to test it out. I have read alot of good things about the program. My mileage is not too great right now, about 16 around town. Like I said before, I will post my gains after I install the program.

Here are the problems that I see people making on mileage. #1 If you have any after market chip installed then your stock Trip meter MPG is likely way off. I have a DP tuner and mine read 25 mpg, hand calculated to 14 mpg. #2 These Excursions have inacurate speedometers, odometers. Check it with the mileage markers or a GPS sometime and you'll see. My brother-in-law consistently reports over 20 mpg towing 5K plus on his with stock tires and Superchips 1704? program 7.3 without any speedometer recalibration. I never get over 14-15 towing. I still don't believe most of these 20-25 mpg claims.

I have had my '03 Eddie Bauer X for over a year now, has a 6" lift, 34 in. tires, rides and runs very nice. I have been watching numerous postings on several different BBS's, talking to people I encounter that drive X's, and thoroughly researching how to get the most MPG out of my engine. I have a new 7.3 engine with only 18,000K on it, everything is stock, and I have installed the Hypertech tuning. My wife drives the rig mostly for her work, which sometimes requires ALOT of around town driving. We fill the tank every 2 weeks. Ya, I know, OUCH!!! But here's what I've come to discover about this vehicle...
We used to drive a Nissan Exterra, and hand calculated it got 14 mpg AT BEST in town, 18-19 on the highway. With the Excusion, we get between 14-16 mpg in town, 18-20 on the highway at higher speeds. From all the research I've done so far, I've concluded that there is NO ONE single setup to squeeze mpg in the mid to high 20's out of this rig. All the mods can sometimes be so different from each other, yet they all add a small change in the performance... Not mpg, but more in the performance!!
Someone earlier was right about one thing tho: We don't drive these vehicles because of superior mpg... When I discovered that our Exterra was getting only 14 mpg in town, and then I learned that the Excursion would get the same or a little better, yet is 3-4 times the size of the Exterra, wow... That's why we own an X!!!! On top of that, the X gives me more piece of mind when it comes to safety for my family!!! I live in Idaho, and frequently travel up through the mountains during all the seasons throughout the year, and I absolutely LOVE the Excursion for this!!! MPG?? For me, who cares... I like to hear about all the mods people do to their rigs and read about the changes in performance, but as of yet, I haven't seen that perfect combonation of add-ons, programming chips, driveline/exhaust changes, etc., that is the one miracle setup to achieve high mpg for the Excursion. It's a fun challenge to watch people try and achieve this goal, but either way, I just love the X for it's size, inside and out!! And to get 16 mpg for a 4 ton rig in town?? I can live with this for now...

Just got back from a 900 mile trip through Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana and average 8-9 mpg pulling toy hauler trailer hand calculated, odometer checked with GPS to be accurate. What's with that?

Just checked my mileage from the first tankfull on a 03 7.3 2WD mostly back and forth to work (about a 10 mile highway trip) and one longer 200 mile round trip. I drove it pretty easy and set the cruise on 61 for much of it.
only had it a little while.. first trip towing. 12.5 mpg local only, 18 mpg highway. 10-11 mpg towing 31 foot travel trailer small hills some mountains 2000 ex. i put the best monroe shocks , sway bar, and later model front spring bumpers.. towed fine if i set up weight distribution hitch as deescribed. make front bumper lower when hiched-- no sway - stock springs.. if hitch not set tight - then it sways all over

For you experts that think I'm blowing smoke when I said I got 28 mpg, when did you drive my truck with the parameters I stated? You didn't, I did. I got 28 mpg under those parameters. That was under optimum conditions and I haven't seen it since because I modified the truck. But with the Cummins going in, I might see it again. We'll see.
I'd have to wonder if you read that figure off your mileage computer? (actually a useless device), or hand calculated?
For those of you on the list that have ANY kind of a performance chip added. Your mileage computer will be wildely innacurate!!!! Not even on the same planet.
If other than stock tires, the only way you're going to get an accurate "calculated" mileage figure is with a GPS to actually measure your ground covered.
