One of the projects that we have in our lab at the moment is a demonstration of the ability to remote read the contents of automotive data recorders. The service department would be able to have a download of the data as you pull into the bay, the emmisions system would send a message (resulting in a letter from the gov't) when/if it goes out of spec, the insurance companies would have records of vehicle actions immediately prior to accidents ... Interesting concepts (that we are demonstrating) but a bit Big Brotherish for my comfort. That said, the word we have is that Ford began placing the instruments in all of their 2003 and up models. They record approximately 100 hours of data including all engine sensors, vehicle speed, steering, radio settings, and a ton more. I can understand some of the "want" for this information, but I also am fearful of abuses of this capability. Wait, another place to introduce a virus!
