Body pops on lifted Xs

Has anyone noticed a popping sound (oil canning) coming from body mounts as the body flexes over bumps/shifts CG? I have 7K on my fabtech kit, and I swear that all the body mount bolts have come loose. I need to take a good look at it this weekend. I checked out the suspension, and it's ok, so body is next on the list.

Re: Body pops on lifted Xs

C'mon,

I know others are experiencing this too. Do'nt be such wimps. You all pulled this crap when I told yyou that a new driveshaft was needed with a lift kit. Those who chimed in said - "NO I DON"T". We then why did you all go out and buy one?

I thoufght we were all supposed to be helping each other, not boosting our ego's.

I've just about had it with the members of this site, ready to comment and answer on stupid stuff, but not willing to comment (admit) that they are experiencing a problem too.

What gives? (and don't even think of posting a BS comment!)

Hands are on the ejection handles!

Re: Body pops on lifted Xs

I had bad body flex on my stock X. Was a recall of front sway bar from the Kentucky plant where my X was born...thats what ford said anyway. I lifted with procomp lift kit which change the front end dynamics and bam.. no more flexing.

I dont know if you have the same problem, but you might check this out first.

Re: Body pops on lifted Xs

Has it ever occured to you that suspension lifts do not affect body mounts. Other than a higher center of gravitiy and a potential for more stress to be put on the body mounts, it doesn't make sense why you have this problem. It would be like saying now that you have put new tires on, your power windows no longer work. The two are very unrelated, unless you have done something to the mounts.

If body mounts were loose, it would be pretty easy to figure this out, because the whole thing would be unstable. Just make sure one doesn't break and fall out, it's not fun (ask me how I know).

I do not have a lifted Excursion but have dealt with plenty of lifted Fords and really have never heard of body mount problems after a suspension lift because, like I said, they are unrelated.

I disagree - they are related! If you stiffen up the suspension, the frame will flex more, and thus the body will flex more. Just look at all the 150s that go off road and hit the bed on the cab! Also, why are 350 CCs having the same problem, but not 250s? Probably because the 350 has a heavier spring and the frame flexes more. Frame flexing (and body creasing) was one of the biggest probles Ford had during the deveopment of the X. So I disagree! Also, FYI - got to a couple of body mount and cranked down on them, and Whalla - 1/2 the pops are gone. I think the TSB mounts are still beeded though.

Re: Body pops on lifted Xs

I never had problems when I ran 6 inches of lift and a 3 inch body lift on my Bronco. The Excursion is obviously differnet, but some of the same rules apply. Are you even wheeling yours or is it a street queen? My guess is a street queen. How much frame flexing do you actually see driving around town? Hardly any, would be my guess. But considering the body is all one big piece and not a separate cab and bed, the popping is going to be typical if you don't retorque your body mounts after a few miles with the lift on. Seems like an easy fix and it sounds like you have fixed most of the bolts so far.
