In Brain fry Now!

I have been reading page after page of outstanding information, but I have not found any comment on voiding the warranty by the mod's being recommended. Am I too worried, or should I be hesitant.

Additionally, after having two previous Dodge 6.9 Dsl's 4x4 where I religiously used Rotella, are the synthetic oils I am reading of really "All that"?

I thought I knew something about dsl's, I guess not or at least on the 7.3 family. Thanks in advance!

Re: In Brain fry Now!

Concerning mods to your new rig, you can sk your dealer (or other local dlrs) if they sell/install chips. some do, some don't...

If none in your area will sell/install, then they probably won't look to favorably if any warranty issues come up.

A chip will give excellent(50-100/125-200) hp/tq gains for about $500.

If you go for a high hp chip, get a set of gauges to monitor EGT's(exh. gas temp's) and trannny temp. Some of the more "potent" chips can be dangerous (without gauges) or while towing.

Any chip can be removed prior to any dealer visit, and after clearing some "codes" from the PCM, they will never know.

Many members have gone to syn fluids with good results, but since I'm chipped...I would rather run dino oil and change it every 3k because of the slilghtly higher soot levels which will be in the oil...though opinions will differ concerning syn vs. dino oil, you could spend 10-15 dollars each oil change interval and have it analysed for contaminants...good preventive maintenence.

Welcome to FDC and enjoy that rig

(BTW-Ford had the 6.9L diesel, Dodge(Cummins) had the 5.9L diesel)

Re: In Brain fry Now!

tedc - Had myself two Ram Cummins ('96 & '98) before the current PSD. Great trucks.

Just my .02 - Shell Rotella worked great for me in the Cummins and is now serving me well in the PSD. I change my oil every 5,000 miles.

I would probably only go to syns if I were in a more severe climate - as the syns have better viscosity stability and a lower pour point. I don't think it would help me - but it obviously would not hurt to go with syns.

Best to y'all

Re: In Brain fry Now!

tedc,

As you have probably figured out from reading many pages of archived material, Shell Rotella is not currently recommended for PSD applications because of its foaming characteristics. See the thread "Dealer says Rotella bad" where this issue was discussed at length. The substance of that thread was that as an engine lubricant, Rotella is fine however for HEUI equipped engines, the excessive foaming makes it an undesirable choice.

Re: In Brain fry Now!

Hmmm... I think our friend POLR BR is getting some biased opinions from some die-hard, brand-oil loyalists.

At one time or another, many postings have contained claims that a PSD ran like crud on brand X but cleared right up on brand Y. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe its just that some engines really do prefer certain oils.

But, if it makes people comfortable, go with what you like and trust. As long as the oil meets all applicable certification requirements (which Rotella does) - how can you go wrong?

Ya know, just for fun, we could burn that used french fry oil for fuel and use garlic olive oil for the engine. What a SWEET smelling rig that would be!

Re: In Brain fry Now!

Hey UTAH I read that post that probear is talking about and if I remember right it was International that had a problem with Rotellas anti foaming additive not lasting long enough. The poster had a paper on it also. It was not Ford per say.

Heck I use ROTELLA by proxy myself. They are who makes Quacker State, unless it is now Penzoil since their merger. If you use Quacker State they have a 250,000 mile engine warrentee for an oil related failure.

Cheers my friend

Re: In Brain fry Now!

Thanks to all who replied.
As I am learning this site does not seem to push any one setup. Rather it appears that everyone puts their thoughts on the table, letting the reader make the ultimate decision. What a great concept!
I must say, I am a computer geek that works Microsoft, and just love my trucks, horseback riding, and camping. I visit many newsgroups each day to keep up on the nerd stuff, if only those folks would provide the insight I find here.
Ya'll are great!, and thanks for the information again. If any of you ever have a computer related problem let me know and I'll return the favor.
