Caliper Pins Frozen - HELP!

Hey All,

The left front caliper bracket pins (not sure what you call them!) are frozen. I have tried oiling and a wrench and hammer to try to "coax" them loose with no luck. Any ideas? I really need to get it back together today! That explains why the truck pulled when braking now I just need to get them loose.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Pas

Oh, it's on my Excursion with 115K on the clock.

Re: Caliper Pins Frozen - HELP!

Did you slide the rubber boot back, stick the wd-40 nozzle stick in and then try to push the boot back around it?

I don't remember what size wrench this was 17MM possibly.

Do you have access to an impact?

A tight fitting box end and a hammer works well, can you tap on a SAE box end and give it a whack?

Keep at it it will come

Note they are different one has a flat and one is triangular as I recall but don't remember how they go.

You could just remove the whole calaper assy and exchange for rebuilts.

I'd suggest vice grips, heat, penetrating oil, and lots of arm strength!

When I replaced my caliper pins, I guess I got lucky. Three of the four pins pulled right out, easy as pie, but the fourth was lodged in there pretty tight. It took a minute or so, but I was able to remove it without using pliers or penetrating oil.

After I removed the pins, I wrapped a drill bit with some nylon scrubbing pad and used my cordless drill to carefully clean out the bore. A few shots of brake cleaner and the bore was as shiny as a new nickel!

I coated the pin and bore with some Ford Motorsport caliper pin lube and viola, good as new.

Re: Caliper Pins Frozen - HELP!

I have had the same problem. Tried everything and found that drilling them out was the only way .

Re: Caliper Pins Frozen - HELP!

One of my calipers is sticking truck pulls to right for just a bit after brakes are applied so I am assuming I need to start on the left.

Just talked to my parts guy and he is ordering;

2) "FRONT CALIPER PIN KIT" about $15 each he said.

You can also get the bracket too. I think it is like 30 bucks...

Re: Caliper Pins Frozen - HELP!

Well I pulled the left front off on Sat afternoon.

What I saw surprised me, the dust boot on one of the pistons was about gone.

I have ESP-ExtraCare so I called the dealer this morning and he said this is a common problem but may not be the cause of the pull.

Wheel spun free enough and and brake dust after 2K since last washing was minimal so I am not in bad shape yet.

BTW the pins looked OK BUT: they changed the lower rear pin.

The one I removed had a rubber portion at the end I would guess for Anti-Rattle.
The replacement did not have this rubber "piston" end on it.

The upper one looked to be the same as original, they are color coded Gray and gold.

I put the new pins in anyway since I could not get the swelled up "rubber piston" back in and it drove fine.

It goes to the dealer on Thurs, first day my mechanic has free.

This will be the first trip to the dealer since the misc BS stuff when new, not bad at 65K.
