Chips for Excursion

I am new to the PSD from ford. Just got my Excursion Limited PSD Sat. I have been reading on this forum about Chipping the PSD. Please explain this and what the benefits are. Will it help HP, milage and other things. Thanks for your help.

Re: Chips for Excursion

If you are looking for more mileage a 50 hp and 100 ft/lb/tq Superchip would be best, it give you another 2-4 mpg. But if you aren't, a 70-hp and 120 ft/lb/tq Superchip will give you another 0-2 mpg. Both programs take away your 95mph limit and they also rework your tranny shifts, giving you more firm shifts and raising your shift points when your foot is in it. If you do get the 70/120 chip it will up your exhaust temps when under load and it is a must that you install a free flowing exhaust at the least...also an ET gauge would be a must.

A good and less expensive upgrade package would be the 50/100 chip, a K&N airfilter, and a free flowing 3 1/2 muffler.

Hope this helps.

Re: Chips for Excursion

Thanks for the info. What exactly do these things do. Do they reprogram the computer to increse HP and shifts, etc? Where is this chip located in the truck? Is this something I can do myself? Will this void my warranty? It seems like a good idea if it is not to much trouble.

Thanks

Re: Chips for Excursion

I would really like to learn more about the Superchips, but am not sure where to go. The thought of improving my fuel milage is more important to me than more power, but I definitely dont want to lose any power to do so.
Can you direct me to more info on the chips?

Re: Chips for Excursion

PMichaal & Kbeaubs,

If you want better mpg you don't have to lose out on power... in fact you gain. With the base Superchip for the PSD you get 50 hp, 100 ft/lb/tq and 2-4 mpg!

As far as the warranty goes... Superchip, along with all the other aftermarket community, claims that its chip doesn't void your warranty. But it is best that you pull the chip before going into your dealership.

You can check out www.Superchips.com for info on their chips or you could drop me an email, I am a Superchips dealer and could answer any questions you might have and could give you pricing.

Re: Chips for Excursion

I just talked to SuperChips and they've heard that the 70/120 chip actually gives you more fuel economy than the 50/100 under certain conditions. I didn't catch which conditions those were (loaded, unloaded, downhill ) but they said that they've been hearing that.

The Flip Chip is around $900 and the 70/120 is around $500. I am assuming that the 50/100 would be slightly less than the 70/120 but probably not much since it is the same amount of work for either chip (programming).

Will be ordering mine today or tomorrow (70/120). Has anyone personally put any one of these chips into their Excursion? I want to know what they needed to do and aprox. how long it took them.

Re: Chips for Excursion

The superchip is programmed for your specific vehicle. It plugs into the diagnostic port under your dash. It provides 70HP, 100 lb. ft. of torque, and more MPG. For more details, call Scott Porta at 904-428-7417, he programs them and guarantees results.

Re: Chips for Excursion

I'd check some of the other "chips" pages to see what others have said about exhaust temps while towing. Apparently the exhaust temps increase substantually with the 70 hp and higher chips, causing the need for a free-flow muffler or exhaust system. Something to ask about anyway.

Re: Chips for Excursion

Yes. SuperChips did recommend a free flow exhaust system for the 70/120 but said it would not be needed if you were not towing or performing only light towing.

In fact, they said that adding a free flow exhaust system with the hot chip added another 20 to 30 horse. This I'd have to see on a dyno but this is what they told me on the phone.

If you wanted to be really safe ... go with the 50/100 chip.

Re: Chips for Excursion

Guys:
If you are looking for information on chips, their applications and results, look through the threads on the aftermarket forum. There are 100 chipped pickup trucks to every 1 chipped Excursion.

Re: Chips for Excursion

I've just installed my SuperChips Flip chip (standard and offroad(hot) programs which are around 50/100 and 70/130 according to SuperChips rep I talked to).

WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT!!

I went from 13mpg at 75mph to 18mpg at 75mph! In the hot mode, I can actually leave a few black marks on asphalt from a stand still. Some guys with trucks can actually light 'em up but we're talking a lot of extra weight on the rear wheels of Excursions.

I did install a pyrometer and boost gauge on an A-Pillar mount. The pyro does show that even the cool program will get the engine too hot if held wide open for too long. I held the throttle wide open for about a mile and the EGT was right on the caution area. This is a little extreme for normal driving conditions but it will get there. The hot program got to red-line EGT area much quicker ... maybe 10 seconds of WOT.

VERY FUN driving my Excursion now! A little honda tried to cut in front of me off the line from a stop light. Let's just say she didn't make it

I had installed a super charger and dual exhaust in my last pickup which gave it around 400hp and this chip blows that away.

Just my experience(s) so far with the chip.

PS - I don't know if the extra $400 for the dual program is worth it for most people ... I just like toys!

Re: Chips for Excursion

Klem or whomever knows,
where do you flip the chip? Is it on the chip itself or is there a switch you can wire into the dash?

Re: Chips for Excursion

I've read everyones comments but am still confused. How does the chip work? What does it reprogram? Does it change the boost or raise emmisions? Why don't they come this way from ford? It seems too good to be true to get all this additional performance without some compromises. Help me if you can. I'm a sceptic by nature. Thanks....

Re: Chips for Excursion

The "Flip Chip" has two small wires (about 22 or 24 gauge) that are about a foot or so long and lead to small switch that you can mount somewhere up underneath your dash.

SuperChips recommends that you shut the vehicle off before flipping the switch. I don't know if others are doing this or not but I have thus far since I haven't heard otherwise if this is necessary or not.

As far as drawbacks, the only thing I've read so far are higher exhaust temperatures and more soot in the oil (oil gets dirtier and breaks down earlier).

Solutions: Install EGT gauge and change oil every 3000 miles instead of every 5000 miles.

Again, this is only what I've read elsewhere on this site. Maybe others can offer more insight into this.
