As long as its WD you're fine.... however you go to straight hitch and the tongue weight drops to 500#. Curt hitch makes a nice class V hitch with a 1000 or 1200# (can't remember which) TW rating. The price for it is very reasonable compared to other names out there.

does curt have one for the Excursion? I did not see one.
class v is a goofy rating that the hitch manufacture came up with it is not a class 5 hitch but rather a cross between a class 3 and a class 4 hitch

One thing I was told about a "class V" is that they usually mount further up the frame (longer arms) which distributes the weight more, thus giving it a higher carrying weight rating.
But yes, all receiver ratings are goofy as in real life, it varies from application to application but they have to rate at it's minimum. A TT vs. a boat trailer for example, are usually 2 very different cases.

the longer arms on the frame have to do with the way ford made the frame on the X that class v is just a trick no other hitch has that rating

Not sure I follow.
I was referring to Class V in general, for other vehicles. I was told that they'll usually mount further up on the frame compared to a Class III/IV OEM. I'm not sure that can be the case on the Ex. though.

My factory receiver hitch is a class V and is for sale. I removed it to install my aftermarket rear bumper. I have a Super Duty; don't know for sure if the frame mounts are the same for the Ex.
