Clunking noise on driver's side

There've been posts here about a driver's side noise, but nothing recent. My X was quiet for the first 1000 miles. And then, halfway through my first venture out onto rough dirt trails, my X developed a thump/clunk coming from the left front. At first I thought I broke one of my new Bilsteins bottoming it out but the shock seems fine. The noise isn't in the shock and isn't related to braking. Is it due to a loose bolt which hold the body to the drive's side frame as other posts indicated?

Re: Clunking noise on driver's side

I wouldn't think it's a body bolt. Then again, I didn't see how badly you bottomed out. Doubt it, anyway.

Check your sway bar bolts. My driver's side bolt was loose and made a clunking type sound on bumps.

Do you just hear the clunking on bumps or driving in general? If it's driving in general, I'd take a look at your driver's side hub.

Re: Clunking noise on driver's side

I agree, check sway bar bolts and mounting. You may also wan't to re-torque the new shocks. Lastly, you could tighten the body mount bolt under the drivers feet. Remove kick panel and pull back carpet. You will see a rubber seal. Remove carefully and tighten bolt.

Re: Clunking noise on driver's side

The sound seems independent of hitting bumps, turning or braking so I'm figuring not likely that it is shock or sway bar bolts but will check them anyway. So maybe it is the hub. Funny, I left the X at Camping World yesterday to have them install a Banks PowerPack. And, as I handed the keys to the mechanic said, "It's gotta clunking sound in the left front. Sounds like the wheel is going to fall off but don't worry about it cause it's still on after about 100 miles of rough dirt road." Hope I don't get a distress call.
