Code P1395 - GP questions

Thanks to klhansen for his reply on the other thread but I need more info. on the Excursion's Glow Plug Sytem.

Here was my post... Ok guys, I ran the code with my Edge Evo. and looked it up and it is a Glow plug monitor fault, bank #1...described as One or more glow plugs failed or circuit failed. Well, this occured yesterday evening after I started my X and came back out after it idled for about 3-5 minutes the SES light was on. I ran the code and cleared it on the spot. It had started fine and has been running fine as well. I plugged it in last night because it was in the 20's and it started right up and no code until later this morning I had shut off and re-started and threw the same code again. Once again it is starting alright and running great...I'm not noticing any white smoke really either . A little history...a few months ago I had a starting issue and thought it might be my GP relay. I ended up having my batteries tested and they were bad. I replaced them with Duralast Golds and all has been well since until this code. I do have a loud buzzing sound that can be heard when I turn the key on and am waiting to start mainly during the first cold morning start. I thought maybe it was a loud fuel pump or something?????...could it be my relay It already seems that my new batteries do not turn over the crank as fast as they first did...could the relay be slowly bogging them. What do I need to test the GPR and where can I get it...not looking to spend a fortune. Do any of the auto part stores like Autozone have the testing equip.? Do some of the X's have different GP systems? How do I know which one I have. Sorry for so many questions...but thanks a lot for the help

Re: Code P1395 - GP questions

Jeff:

A year ago or so, I was throwing some code....I can't remember the number, but it was for the Glow Plug [#6], the wire harnes [UVC], or the glow plug control module.....YADA, YADA, YADA....
After screwing around with it, the EASIEST thing to do, was just change out the Control Module, which some of the other guys posting here had found to be a problem with the Y2K vintage....
Bought the part from some ONLINE discount parts dealer I found here on this web....List on the part was $240 [?]...purchased it for $120 [?]...took me about 30 minutes to put it in....

DA DAAAA!!! Solved the problem!!!....

FMT, after briefly climbing under my hood I think I might have the regular style GP Relay. Why do some X's have the Relay and some have the control?? I now have an oil leak of this moring which left a little puddle in my garage so I will be climbing under the hood for a while some time this weekend. I will take some pics. of my GP set-up while under there. I haven't had an oil leak for almost two years darn it It's coming from my valley and running down...I'm sure it's my pedestal or an hpop fitting of some sort Also, have the darn worn out wire causing my OD manual control not to work. These three things are starting to drive me crazy...I'm so busy right now with two boys in diapers, busy at work and my wife back at work and traveling that I'm about to lose my mind. I'm about to say screw it and head to the dealer but I'm trying to hold off because I know good and well I'll get screwed. Flat rate and over priced parts will kill a dad I've got to get better directions on how to fix these problems and get it done.

Re: Code P1395 - GP questions

Jeff I think you have the glow plug module. I had a Y2K X and that is what it had. Mine was of the April build date so the engine was manufactured before then Mine went kaput at exactly 100 miles. I picked it up late and messed around a little that knight . When I backed out of the drive it threw a service engine light. Took it to the dealer and that is what it was. They took one off of a truck and sent me on my way.

Re: Code P1395 - GP questions

I think H Ed S is right about the module

I believe California required something for them to put it on there Just for Excursions.....

Anyway, it's really an easy part to fix yourself, if that's what you determine it to be....

Re: Code P1395 - GP questions

Alright guys, I had some time to snoop around under my hood. My engine build date was 10/99 and it appears to me that I have a regualr GPR?? Please take a look at my new pics. on my webshots link and I have some pics. under GPR or Glow Plug Relay. Just to the passenger side of my fuel filter housing and a little to the rear are two brown colored relays. The farthest one back had a black plastic cover that snaps on over it and snap right off. This looks like it should be the GPR? I do not see anything that looks like a glow plug module or controller. Is this the regular GPR that I can replace with the GPR 109 from Napa? Please give me some advice.

Re: Code P1395 - GP questions

Well I think you win the prize for that one...

Standard relays are a heck of a lot cheaper than modules...

My "X" was built in Feb 2000, and it's got the module....

Good Luck ....
