I run a 500 watter on our X in place of the block heater.

I just looked at your pictures and that Wolverine oil pre-heater is the same type pad I was talking about that Zero-Start makes. For some reason was thinking you were talking about a oil circulating heater which some people up here use but they are very uncommon. The pads work very well. The pads come in all different wattages and sizes for any application. Up here in the Arctic most people use a junction box and run the pan heater in addition to the block heater rather than in-place of it but if I could only run one I would heat the oil rather than the coolant. Warm oil is much better for the engine than warm coolant.

Re: Cold Weather Questions

Thanks for the link I'll have to email em and see if they ship as the subject comes up from time to time for owners wanting well made grille covers.

I picked up ours from a manufacturer in Minnesota and the cover does work the way it's supposed to

Gotta love the Christmas lights on a snow covered house too, very nice

Re: Cold Weather Questions

They ship anywhere. The ones they make go all the way down to the bottom of the bumper (behind it)and wrap back toward the oil pan. They seal up the front very good. Alaska Tent makes most all the winter fronts for the rigs on the North Slope from pick-up trucks to semi-trucks to dozer's and loaders. We haul many of them up there along with duck ponds..

Re: Cold Weather Questions

Not too bad today here in Fairbanks about +14. We had a little -30 a few weeks ago but the real cold won't set in until after the first of the year. I did a hit a little -45 on my last trip up north a few days ago. The coldest was around pump station 3 if I recall. It was miserable from pump 2 into Deadhorse though. Took three and a half hours to go 28 miles. I hate blowing snow...

Re: Cold Weather Questions

Where do I get a flat extension cord? How thick are they? Is there a brand name?

Re: Cold Weather Questions

Outside of Romex cable I haven't seen a flat type cord in a 12 gauge 3 wire arrangement with plugs,I did a quick internet search and came up dry.

Maybe someone has ran across something similar in design.

You trying to go under a door or something?

Re: Cold Weather Questions

I think they were popular 10 15 years ago
I have one but do not use it as it will not coil up like a round cord they are a beach to wind up properly, May be why you can not find one.

It was about 4 above here this morning here in Cent Michigan
I plugged it in for two or three hours and it started just fine but cranked a little slow. It rattled a bit but sounded ok withing a minute since the oil was warm (warm = 45 degrees after starting)

Then I drove off without unplugging

Oh well only the second time I have done that

Flat extension cords - two options.

If you are looking for a flat extension cord, I can offer two options. First, go to your local hardware store and ask for an 'Air Conditioner' extension cord. They are always heavy duty, and most of them that I have seen have been flat. Even Home Despot carries them in our area. The bad news - the longest one you're gonna find will be about 6 foot.

If you want a longer cord and are willing to do a little work yourself, here's how to get one. Find a well-driller in your area (look in the yellow pages). They use a flat #12 waterproof and highly flexible cable to send power down to the pumps. Buy an in-line plug and receptacle, install one on each end, and you're set. I have one that is about 125' long that I use around my shop. I've had it for years and it still looks and works like new.

Hope this helps!

Re: Cold Weather Questions

Bruce,
This may help the drive off while plugged in. I loop the cord over the drivers mirror and sometimes lift the drivers windshield wiper. This will alert me about the cord. ( I have drove off too, with it plugged in so I started this and it has worked since 97.

Block heater element life?

This morning when I went out to crank up the truck the coolant needle wasn't at it's normal place at the first line and the cold outdoor temps have been the same in the mornings.

Is it possible that the block heater element can start going bad?

Technically know I should post this up in the engine & drivetrain slot but we have a good thread going that I could field that quick question.

Re: Cold Weather Questions

I have no memory of where I got my flat outdoor extenion cord, so it is probably a few years old. I remember them being common, but also difficult to roll neat, and stiff. Whenever my wife drags me to garage / estate sales, she's always nice enough to select a few advertising tools or garage items. I've bought several extention cords in good shape for under $2.00 from these sales. This cord may have come from that.
