Computer MPG

I noticed a month ago, just before a trip, that the trip-o-meter was reading 13.3 mgp... never been that low (1.5 years and 25k miles of ownership).. so I reset, took a long 400 mile ride.. and noticed it still read 13.3.. now a month later and its still 13.3 after another 2 resets... Am I resetting this wrong, or is this a known problem. What can I do about it. PS.. this means that on a full tank, the miles left is only about 500 also.. but I am pretty sure I am getting more.

Re: Computer MPG

You cant go by the computer. I would recomend checking it by hand and then you can see if it matches. If it doenst i would just not worry about it and do it by hand if you want to know what it actually is. Also, if you buy any type of chip/tuner, it will def not be right. actually it will say like 24mpg, its really annoying. has anyone found out if they have done a setting on a chip/tuner to make it read right and still give you the extra HP that it should???

Re: Computer MPG

The newer ones still read fine. Mines never more than .5 at most off of hand calc. Tuner or not.

In this case, I think there is a problem with it. 13.3 over and over sounds like something is wrong with inputs or the comp., not the actual MPG.

Re: Computer MPG

I have the Banks Exhaust, DP-Tuner, Gauges, and 4X4 Lock Out Hubs. This has all helped some but I'm still getting 13:8 mpg with a calculater. The computer/X says 13:5. I added the goodies to help with towing. I don't know why I'm getting crummy mileage. Live in WI, No fun here

Re: Computer MPG

Our computer is has never been more than .5 or so mpg off of hand calculated. My mileage dropped considerably recently (down 5.5 mpg on the hwy and 1-2 city). Chased ghosts for about a week then finally added some cetane boost and she's back up to 15.5 city/20-21 hwy - which is our normal. I can't imagine winter blend would make that big of a hwy diff but?? Definitely no leaks. Our computer also fluctuates constantly so I'm thinking if your stuck in the 13s something's up with the comp.
Good luck

Re: Computer MPG

I have the diablo tuner and im running the 65hp econ and mine went from reading 15-18 stock to reading 22-24 with the tuner. no idea why it went up, but i can tell you that i am no getting anywhere near that with the truck. It has been cold lately so i would say thats why my milages hasnt been that good, but i think with the tuner, im still only getting around 16-18. I am hoping that once i put the air filter and exhaust on it will make a difference.

Re: Computer MPG

Does anybody know if the false reading of the overhead is directly proportionate to the amount of overtuning? I ask because my overhead was reading an average of 32-33 mpg (It was almost exactly double my hand calcs). Then I disconected my Edge EZ and it dropped down to reading about 28mpg average (this was when I discovered I have an unknown chip or prgram). NO drop on power that I could feel however. Just curious if there was any relation.

Dabus - how do you like that Diablo programmer?

Re: Computer MPG

I like it so far. I dont really have anything to compare it to though. Like i said i run the 65hp econo tune that is supposed to help in MPG. When i bought the truck it had 93K on it and since then i am at 100K. the MPG hasn't really gone up alot but i think when i got the truck it must have been getting only 13-15. I think i have been averaging around 16-18 and that on the HWY runinning 70-75 going from PA to MD, pulling hills up and down 83. I did put it up to the 80hp setting once and i felt like i was in a blown mustang the way the truck would rock from side to side when you hit the gas, it was very cool. I hope the exhaust and air filter help everything overall once i install them.

It is proportionate "usually". The computer is reading injector pulses and the chips are increasing the pulse width making the actual fuel injected higher than what the computer thinks.
