Coolant Leak - HELP

I have a coolant leak it appears just below the water pump right from the center of the engine, but it does not seem to be coming from the pump itself, but below. The truck is not over heating.

Can anyone guess what the source is?

Thanks.

Kevin

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

This is kind of a hard question to answer...with out having ESP.... You need to get in there with a light and see what is wet. It is either coming from the water pump gasket (water pump to timing gear housing) or out the weep hole in the top of the water pump input shaft housing. Of course assuming it is not leaking down from the thermostat housing... Take a better look and see if you can isolate it. There are just too many parts that come into contact with the coolant on the front of the engine.

good luck,
mark

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

I guess I can look better, but it look like it was coming between the timing cover and the water pump, but I could not see the exact source. Do they attach? I was under the impression that the water pump bottom bolt was about two inches from the timing cover.

Bet still the water pump? I will know tomorrow.

I appreciate your response.

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

Just had my waterpump replaced on my 00 X, I had the same problem. It should fall under warranty if you are under 100K. I hope so, I think that it was several hundred dollars in TX to repair it. Don't go to Rockwall Ford took them 3 times to get it right.

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

I went through the same problems,I saw a little antifreeze under the water pump and on the pulleys (no doubt a water pump).I was going to change it myself I didn't want Ford touching it but sence I also had a oil leak all coverd by waranty I sent it in. Got it back Ford said it was the thermastat.I found that inpossible.Well by the time I got home it was leaking again. Went back and and gave them a ear full and said this time change the waterpump this time. It's a miracle they changed the waterpump and the leak stopped. The pump only had 56K on it. Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

84K on mine when it went out. Pretty normal. It should definately be covered if under 100K.

While your there...
Get the upper, lower hoses, and thermostat housing replaced(they may charge for those),

The intercooler blue boot should be oily(they should cover that),

See if they'll throw in a cam position sensor(keep your old one as a spare in the "rear glove box").

My 2 cents

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

Leaking out the weep hole is your sign it is time for a new one. The ceramic seal on the impeller wears and this is where it leaks from. It is a sign, make sure you heed this warning

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

You were all correct. It was the water pump. It took them a day of pressure checking and running die to determine the problem. Dealer acted as if it is unusual for the water pumps to malfunction.

Is a coolant filter necessary? I just flushed the coolant at 60K and the pump still malfunctioned at 75K.

"...unusual for a pump to malfuncton."

I just put the third one in our Ex. First went out at 45,000 miles. The second at 84,000.

Re: Coolant Leak - HELP

I flushed out the coolant system using the method given on this board. This included removing the rear plugs on the block etc. I flushed the system 4 times. Nice and clean no crud. I installed a coolant filter thinking that for a couple of bucks why not. I thought that I might get a little bit of stuff from the FW-16. After a couple of mths I decided that I would change the filter and take the old one apart. To my surprise it had casting sand in it.

So is a filter nesessary...yes.
