Courtesy light overide switch

I have o3 excursion 7.3 liter and I want to install the coutesty light override switch. I followed a thread with pictures from a 2001 and the fuse box looks nothing like mine. It mentioned two blue/black wires that went to the running board lights and the courtesy lamps. I see one blu black wire and thats it. My owners manual mentions nothing about which relay controls this. ANy help would be great.

FOund out that the 2003 and up are differrent fuse panels. The location for the courtesy and running board lights wire is in the pass side kick panel. Just clip the black wire with light blue tracer thagt is running to the wire plug. I am now going to run wire up to the garage door opener compartment and mount a switch. FOund this info on the FTE site.

Wow thanks! First question, I have a 7.3 in my 2003 which is a split year. Do you know if it makes a difference? I have already bought switches to do the mod. I am planning on a switch for the interior lights and another for the undercarriage lights. With 3 young sleeping children I can leave the interior lights off when I open the damn door and can leave the undercarriage lights on if I drop the damn key fob!

What can you offer to augment the thread with the mod for the earlier trucks?

Can you snap a pic? Can you offer an edited version of the text?

Is it just like the earlier mod except the location of the wires?

Thanks,

Dunbar

Well there was not much to the mod text. I also have a 2003 7.3. It basically said go to pass kick board and find black wire with light blue stripe and wire in a switch. Thats it. Now when I cut the wire it killed both the running board lights and the interior lights at the same time. All I have done so far is cut the wires. I mistakenly cut two wrong wires in the process and have no factory gauges or radio working right now. I have not had a change to wire anything back together yet. The black and blue wire you need goes to one of the plugs located behind the kick board. It is the plug that is mounted closer to the firewall. The two plugs are attached to the body via a clip. I took it off the mounting clip to give me more room for the wire splice. To make sure which plug is correct just unplug one at a time until the lights go out. That way you will know for sure which one has the wire you need coming from it. I would hate to tell you that the plug you need is in one place and it is actually backwards on yours. Remember humans put these things together. Be careful as there are other wires that look similar. I accidentally cut a light blue wire with a black stripe cuz i was not paying attention. There is also a black with light blue stipe in a different bundle of wires behind the kick board that is close to the firewall. It does not go to any plugs so you should be safe by not getting it confused. To remove the overhead console just remove the screw in the sunglass holder compartment and then pull down on the console at the front and rear. Pull firmly. It will come down and you can unplug everything and mount the switch and wire it. I will run the wires behind the weather stripping up to the top o fhte a pillar and then tuck the wires under the headliner where it meets the windshield. The wires with then go over to the console. If you need anything else let me know.

Found something out tonight. I went and tried to just hand twist the wires back together to get the lights to come on and the radio and nothing worked. So I went to the internet and found a thread about no radio, lights windows etc and to check fuse #35. Sure enough it was blown. I must of short circuited something when I iether cut the wires with the lights on or something. So if you get done and still no lights check fuse #35 its a 10 amp mini atc. Good luck.

Talking

Finished the mod. I ended up installing the switch between the powered vent windows switches instead of in the garage door opener compartment. This way I dont have to open any compartments to get to the switch and its easy to reach. For the switch I used radio shack model # 275-0693. It looks totally factory. All I had to do was pull down the overhead console and flip it over. I removed the powered vent window switches with a torx screw driver and moved them off to the side. Then drill a 3/4 hole right between the two. I used a hole saw bit I bought at lowes. The switch mounts right in the hole and there is plenty of room to run the wires. I am loving this.
