I just saw Ford is again recalling 2000-2003 Excursions for a faulty cruise control switch. I have 210,000 miles with no problems, I also have the 7.3 built on 10/02, its an 03. I really don't want to take it to the dealer for this, you would think by now it is ok since nothing has happened. What do you think?

I would take it in. Thats what I thought about the cam sensor I never had a problem with. If your cruise would stick one time when you did'nt want it to it would be one time to many
you know what, they said only 36,000 of these model year Excursions were still on the road, it hit the SD PU too. I guess it is a fire problem, the Windstar is the worst but all were made with a Texas Inst part that will start a fire under the hood.

I took mine in this morning. Only took a few minutes to do the job. Get it done.

Mine is in the recall. I already changed my CPS but did it myself. Ford still shows mine needing this and I do not want them to take out my good one.
I think I will take the recall letter for the CPS to the dealer and see if they will hand me a CPS. Then I will go in for the Cruise Control switch later.
Anyone heard of a Exc or SD catching fire from this?

..
I've read about this recall for sometime now....
I've got a Y2K Diesel with 177K on it, and took it in recently to have the
Cruise switch fixed....
What they told me, was it did NOT apply to diesels...
However, they did want to replace my CPS, which has been working fine for the last 9 years....I do however carry 2 in the glove box, for the just in case requirement..
I've read about the fire hazard as it applys to the switch...
But this was quite some time ago....
I don't know what to make of all this....
What they told me, was it did NOT apply to diesels...
....
They are wrong, AND stupid.

I stopped by Wabash Ford in Indy (PowerStrokeShop) and had the recall work done. Took less than a half hour from the time I walked in until I was back on the road again. They did tell me that part of the recall was to check for brake fluid inside the harness connector, if detected then the switch is also to be replaced.
The circuit isn't constantly powered up on the Diesels, just on the gassers, so the hazard is lessened. But a fire starting underhood while underway wouldn't be good either.
I recall a TDS member had just that happen to him, so if I was affected, then I'd be taking it in.
The fix for the gassers was a 5 amp inline fuse if the switch wasn't leaking, and the fused harness and a new switch if it was leaking , IIRC.
I guess Ford got nervous about fires in the Diesels as well. At least they're being proactive on it.
So I relented, and took my X into the stealership, and had them do the recall on the cruise control switch... It appeared they only changed the wiring harness.... it took only a couple of minutes...
The mechanic talked me into having the CPS recall done also...He said he had seen a lot of problems with the older ones, and didn't remember having any problems with the newer ones...So we did that also....That took only about 3 minutes for him to do that...
So, then I asked him to check my backup sensor aid....The shut off switch, and alarm were not working, and the light on the switch button was on continually....He got his trusty little computer out , and checked that for me and told me it was the alarm that was burned out....they said the part cost $30, and the total install would be $150 or something...
So, I got the part number from them , and ordered the part for Wabash Ford, for $21+ S&H.....I did the intsall my self in about 15 minutes....I had to pay a total of $30 for all the service, which was for the computer parking aid check
That's the first time my truck has been in a Ford garage in nearly 5 years....
The place was empty....Out of maybe 20 bays, there were 5 vehicles in there....
They want $100 for an oil and lube....I take it over to the 10 Minute Oil change and get it done for $75, with Rotella, NOT Fords oil.....They clean the windows inside and out, vacuum all the littler up, and even give it a walk around top to bottom check...
They'll have 3 or 4 guys working on the car at one time...
Why would I go to Ford for anything that I didn't need too????

It bothers me to see people bashing on dealerships in this sense... You saved what, like $4 after shipping to not support your local dealership (your local economy...)?? Seems to me like the $30 you paid to have your problem diagnosed was money well spent..... who cares where you decide to get your oil changed. The talented poeple who work at these dealerships are the same people who come on here and help you out with your problems so you don't have to go there, and then you get to say how useless dealerships are.
My old shop had a agreement to repair the local "quick lube's" mistakes. I LOVED it when they screw up!

I had a '91 ranger, the local quick lube didn't put enough oil back in afterwards, my wife drove it home that way and it over heated and finally lost oil pressure. The lost oil pressure was due to a teflon oil treatment melting and turning into black cottage cheese in the oil pan then plugging the oil pickup.
