I wouldn't chance a great running 7.3 on a roll of the dice. I've heard of too many people who wished they had not gotten rid of their 7.3 for a 6.0. It's hit or miss with them. My best buddy has an 03 and not one problem but also know a guy who has a 05 and the things been in the shop more times than not.
The 7.3 makes less power but is argueably one of the most reliable diesel engines ever produced.
I'd keep it personally.

i had a 04 6.0 brand new. started having all the infamis problems with it. so i traded it in for a duramax truck. and looked for a 02 excursion with the 7.3
owning a 6.0 almost made me quit buying products. $47,000 dollars and the thing didn't make it to 40,000 miles....keep your 7.3

I have an early 04 with the 6.0, bought it used with 64k on it, didn't take long to lose an EGR cooler and blow the head gaskets. Got it all fixed under warranty, added ARP studs at the same time. Also modified the passenger side up-pipe to make sure all of the exhaust flow goes where it belongs, i.e. into the turbo. That helps with the coolant puking problem. Seems to be ok ever since, now at 108k, although it did get hot and puke a little coolant on a brutal climb recently. Tranny is acting a little strange, especially if I'm running a hot tune, wouldn't be surprised if it needs a rebuild sooner or later. All in all, I'm not sure I'd buy the 6.0 if I had it do do over, because I still don't really trust it. I probably could have gotten a slightly older truck in similar condition for around $10k less, and used the money to build a beefy tranny and get the 7.3 running strong. That would likely be a more reliable and satisfying combo.
ps: Also forgot to mention that the mileage on my 6.0 stinks. I'm not a leadfoot, but best I can do around town is about 14, highway cruising unloaded @65-70 about 16, maybe 17 if I keep it strictly down to 65. Friend I know with the 7.3 does much better, and his is taller with bigger tires.
I have an 2005 , 6.0 and havent had a bit of trouble . But I'm sure "now" I will after running my mouth about it . 67k miles on it .

My wifes X has 190K miles. The motor and tranny have never been touched. Two CPS's, alternator, batteries, and gpr.
There is a killer deal on a local 00 X PSD, 265K miles all freeway, $8,600. Sort of makes me think about buying another. The poor guys wife is forcing the sale
If something happened to my wifes X we would start looking for the lowest mileage 00 X to replace it. A low mileage 03 7.3 would be my second choice but like the idea of forged rods especialy considering the miles we would put on it and what it would tow.

Same here. I just turned 67,000 miles. Except for a CPS and an altenator, no problems. Except for an accident or someone stealing it, it will not leave me for a long time.

Broken into three seperate times, passenger front side window broke twice. Last time it was my wifes fault as she didn't lock or arm the vehicle with the alarm. Guess to look on the bright side it saved me making a third glass claim in three years! Hit while parked once, clean get away just left a small dent in the driver side door.
And it eats rotors. Tried the slotted and drilled ones and now they are making noise and shuttering.
About six months ago on autrader saw some 16-30K mile 00 X PSD's. You can still find nice low mileage 03 7.3's.

6.0 heads are junk- almost all of them that are brought it for rebuild are cracked between the valves. That may or may not cause anyone concern- they run ok that way, and they will run a long time- just plan on buying new heads at rebuild time.
Personally, I'd advise you to keep the 7.3 and don't fiddle with it. They are prone to expensive breakage when thrashed or modded too much.

Not counting the $50,000 I've dumped into drive train rebuilds and swaps, I wouldn't. I'm just guessin'. Wanna help install a firewall...and I don't mean on a router, I mean in my excursion!

Is it a safe assumption that a Ford tech would inspect for this while doing a head gasket replacement? How about a valve job or inspection? I forgot to ask when they did my gaskets last year and was curious. Also, if cracked, are there any symptoms or ill-effects that one should look for? Hoping to keep my 6.0 healthy for a very long time so need to get educated!
Cracked Heads - Both on exhaust valve 2nd cylinder
I have a F350 Harley Davidson that I use to pull my race trailer. I noticed some coolant in the engine compartment last year but shrugged it off as just a possible overheating. This summer my son came back from Quebec and said the vehicle was overheating so when he got back we took it in to the Ford Dealer. Sure enough both heads were cracked in the exhaust valve seat on the 2nd cylinder in each head. Ford is not going to cover the warranty because of the existance of an aftermarket product on the truck. They can not prove it was caused by the Banks kit. They denied warranty solely on the fact that there was an aftermarket chip on the vehicle.
To this point no one at Ford can give me a technical reason to justify how they can say it was caused by the Banks kit.
DON'T BUY A FORD with this engine, it has problems see their TSB 06-231-2 for details. And don't put a chip in it. It is going to take a long time to make up for the $10,000 repair bill and the $3,000 for the Banks kit.
