Diesel smell

For about the past week, I smell diesel (not exhause but more like fuel) in the car while driving. It is most noticable when the AC fan kicks on when first started. I've looked at the floor in case I tracked some in, but that doesn't look like the problem. Then other thing is it is intermittent. Not sure if it is a real problem yet, or not. I am wondering if anyone else out there has had the same 'symptoms'? BTW, I kinda like the smell

Re: Diesel smell

Lok for a fuel leak. Have you noticed your fuel mileage being a little off lately? I don't know where all the X's can have leaks, but when my 95 started leaking I had a terible smell in the cab.

Good Luck

It gets 21-23 mpg consistently (on the highway) and 17 mpg in town. My remaining planned mod list includes Amsoil & electric radiator fans.

Hers: 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic; 2.2Ecotec 4 cylinder. VERY dissapointed in mpg's.

Re: Diesel smell

I had a similar problem with my 2001 7.3 a year ago. I replaced the fuel filter and that smell went away. I could not see any fuel leaking and when I installed the new fuel filter I made sure I oiled the rubber seal. Good Luck!

Re: Diesel smell

As with any trouble shooting...
Ask yourself what changed just before the issue came up?

Usually THAT's the cause...

now if nothing was changed just before then...
the research has to be a little more detailed...
and you got some great suggestions so far...

good luck...

Re: Diesel smell

If you haven't changed anything in a long time, you could have a loose injector. Sometimes 1/4 turn is all it takes.

Re: Diesel smell

Take a look in the valley on top of the motor. A common leak is at the fuel/water drain valve on back of the fuel filter housing. (Or like others have said, it could be leaking around the fuel filter cap.)Do a search on fuel leak or fuel +valley in the 7.3 engine and drivetrain forum and you will find plenty of info on the problem.
