Whenever my Excursion is parked or sitting at a stoplight with the A/C (or heater) on, I smell a faint odor of Diesel exhaust inside the cabin. Once I am moving, the smell goes away. I took it to my dealer, who kept it for a day and said they couldn't find anything wrong. I also asked a technician at Wal-Mart, who told me that its common for the turbo pop-off valve (wastegate?) to release a little exhaust backpressure periodically while a vehicle is idleing. The exhaust is released under the hood which is probably recirculating through my heater intake. Could this be true, or is this smell probably coming from a leak somewhere? Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, can it be corrected?
Have you had your fuel filter replaced recently? I know when I did it for the first time, I didn't get the lid tight enough. What a mess, fuel sprayed every where. Even sprayed into the cabin fresh air intake. Took forever to flush that out of there. Wife was not happy with it.

Which setting do you have the A/C controls on? Keep in mind that the A/C setting gets outside/fresh air the MAX A/C setting recirculates the air inside the vehicle. You can change the temperature to heat or cool as necessary while using the A/C or MAX A/C settings.
Just remember that the only setting that doesn't bring in outside fresh air is the MAX A/C setting.
Note: My Ex does the exact same thing your describing when I have the a/c set for the A/C setting and the problem instantly goes away when using the MAX A/C setting....

Just remember that if you leave the AC on Max the system may develop a moldy/musty odor. To remedy this turn the AC off of max for a minute or two before shutting off the truck. That will dry it out and eliminate the moldy/musty odor.
