Looking to upgrade the wife's Altima, and I'm trying to justify a good used Excursion. Diesel of course. Used around here though they're bringin' (excuse me, asking) 3-5k more than a V10.
Several posts in the Gasser forum indicate that 11-14 MPG is possible with the V-10.
Our driving is mix of highway and city, maybe a little more city. My truck gets 15+ normal, 17 if I baby it, and 20 if I can string it out on the interstate.
What kind of mileage do y'all see? Help me justify a diesel...
Hey cbuttre835, I had a 2001 v10 ex. It got just shy of 11.5 mpg around town,(not babying it and with the ac blowing)and around 15 or 16 on highway depending on speed. I now have a 2002 diesel ex. which is still breaking in and it just went above 15 around town and I'm getting about 18 on the highway. From everything I've read my mileage might still improve a little bit. The only way their mileage won't differ much is towing a heavy load at highway speeds, the mpg is lousy with both. Hope that helps, KRK

Since 3/11/01 I have traveled 84,651 miles as of 9/6/03
I have used 5,728.09 gallons of fuel at and average cost of $1.3485 per gallon. The "X" has averaged 14.78 mpg this includes towing a travel trailer for 10,000 miles, also idle time during winter or hot summers.
FYI
The "X" will get 21 ~ 22 mpg at 52mph. good rule of thumb is for each 5 mph above 52 mph the mileage will drop 1 mpg.

Cool... we'd be getting a 7.3 if we go Diesel, due to price constraints. Mileage is better than I budgeted for... with the difference in gas and diesel prices right now, looks like about the same $$$ / mo in fuel as with the '02 Altima.
Ken1, this is off topic, but how often are you (or are you) changing bypass elements and sampling with the Amsoil HDD? I'm running the AME in my '97, but the bypass filter setup is new (~5k miles) and the oil is still plenty sooty. Wondering if I should change filters yet?
I have the oil checked every 10K, Ialso have the Ford's extended warranty till 130K. I change full flow filter every 10K except last change was done at 15K on full flow filter in 5K miles I will send another sample and expect good results. I did change my By Pass filter about 62K .
The oil soot is 1.6 after this many miles.

Sounds like I have a problem then because I am getting 12.5 ish combined driving and not really hammering it much but I am running #2 and pushing 285/75/16 goodyear mtr's but prior to the tires/lift I was only getting 14.5 at 70/75mph. Sound like I should change the fuel filter? Any other thoughts?

Mine is going into the shop tonight, one concern being bad mileage. 13.4-14.0 in the city. 11.5-12.0 towing. I even have a K&N filter now. I was told there is a TSB out on mileage improvements.

I usually get 14mpg mixed driving, and 17mpg highway only with the cruise set to 72mph. I have found that my speedo is off which might cause who knows what problems. (off by around 5mph at 72mph)
I added a half bottle (small bottle) of dieselkleen to this tank of fuel, stuff in a grey bottle came from Wal-Mart but have seen it at several truck stops, and it seems to be REALLY helping. Seat of the pants the engine is much smoother, we'll see about the mpg once I finish of this tank in the next few days.

Mine is in the shop as I write and has been there 1 week. Performance (mpg & power) is an ongoing problem. It was awesome when I purchased it, but then it went in for a turbo oil leak and came out a dawg. I have been told by the service writer "It's winter fuel", "They get worse over time", and "That's the way it's designed"
Now they tell me everything is in spec. so there's nothing wrong. They even told me that they took it out and checked it on a flat road and it got 23 mpg. I want what they're !
I don't think that 11.5-12 mpg is bad for towing. I get 15'ish solo around town and 18-20 on the road, depending on my speed and the wind. I've heard that once you go over 65 MPH the mileage starts to drop rapidly. My experience is consistent with that.
Towing my RV, which has the aerodynamics of a brick, I've gotten 10.3 - 12 mpg, again, depending on the wind. Towed a 5X10 U-Haul not long ago and got 17 at 70 MPH.
