I understand that all (?) Excursions come with 3.73 gears and a limited-slip differential...is this true?
Is that what the "3L73" is referring to on the tag?
Also, I've been told that the limited slip is a "trac lok". How agressive is this? Clutch type, yes? Is additive needed? While 4-wheeling, is it necessary to fool it with the e-brake to get it to engage?
I'm used to a Detroit, Lockright and/or Eaton Gov-lock, which use different ways to get there from here, but all end up able to supply 100% torque to one tire while the other tire is in the air. I have a jeep for the crazy stuff, but want to use the X for some mild backcountry wheelin'.
I tried quoting to reply, and it just consistently crashes my browser... but anyways...
Not _all_ Excursions have limited slip. It's an option that costs about $300 here in Canada IIRC.
I havn't exercised mine much yet, but it's a locking differential. From the posts I've read, it's not very aggressive and it's clutches are prone to wear out ... but it's otherwise useful. I ordered it with mine.
Now... I believe people call the exaust brake 'the e-brake' ... I can't imagine how that would help lock your differential.

Locking diff doesn't depend on torque to load the clutches (if it has clutches) and either locks solid like a spool, or does not allow either tire to turn slower than the carrier. A limited slip, otoh, uses the input torque to load the clutches. So, if one tire is on ice, or in the air, it's possible that it will just sit and spin since little or no torque is required to spin the tire. I believe the tracklock is a clutch type limited slip, from the descriptions I've heard. Track lock is lovingly referred to as trashlock in 4x4 circles.

Lingo. Ok, I was referring to the emergency brake...you use it to provide resistance to fool a limited slip.
mine works great, that is after I installed the air lockers
