Door locks?

I just bought a 2000 Excursion and the power locks are giving me a hard time. I talked to a couple of people that say the accuators are worn out probably from kids messing with the door locks. Has anyone else run into this? What did it cost you to have it fixed? All doors are weak including the rear. If it sits for awhile it works o.k. but if gets used alot they will not unlock and sometimes will not lock. I tried moving the lock by hand and they all seem to move freely.

Re: Door locks?

I think it's a pretty common problem. If you search on the forums there were some good posts in the last year on how to replace them. I think they're not that expensive if you're willing to invest the sweat equity.

Good luck,
Dave

Re: Door locks?

It happened to me. Both front actuators went bad at the same time. Service manager says he's seen all five go bad at once! They're approx. $75.00 each and can be a pain in the neck to replace.

Re: Door locks?

Kevin: I got about the same $ from the dealer and that is just for the parts. I had all five replaced today with aftermarket electromagnet accuators. The fronts were $50 per door installed lifetime warranty. I do not know the $ for the rear yet.

Re: Door locks?

Another thing is that the ford ones apparently use a plastic screw type accuator. This is a weak design according to my alarm and stereo shop. Spal is the name of the accuators that they used. Here is a link to the ones they used: link They gave me a lifetime warranty on parts and labor

Re: Door locks?

MMSAFD::

Thanks for the "TIP" on the SPAL door lock acutators....I called them, and ordered some from the company in Sunrise Fl..$50 for the set of 4...The guy down there said they would work with either a 2 or 5 wire set-up,,,,I'll pop open the interior panel and see what I acutally got....The Ford dealer here in Waynesville, NC. gave me a verbal estimate of approx $300 for the front two on my "X", and maybe another $300 for the rear....I'll try to do it myself, the first opportunity I get.....I mean $500 savings ain't hay!!!! ""IF"" it took me the whole weekend...that's still $250 a day paycheck

Re: Door locks?

No problem. I wish I had known they were that cheap before I had them done and I would have attempted it myself. My X has the 5 wire set up and it looks like they only used two wires for the new accuators and the others are taped off. I don't know how yours is but my back door was not working very well also. Not any more they all work great!

Re: Door locks?

Has anybody installed these actuators from the link above? Will the remote for the door locks still work?
