door speakers

Guys, I'm interested in upgrading the factory speakers to something better. Does not need to be high end stuff, just better than the usual low end the factory puts in. For curiosity's sake I was looking at the Crutchfield website, and they list nothing available for the front doors. They do list several for the back doors and the last row back. Has anyone here installed anyting decent (pioneers, jbl's etc.) in the front doors in the 6X8 size that did not interfere with the windows or anything else without modifications, and still kept under the door panel so it looks stock?
Thanks.

Re: door speakers

I installed 3 way 6x9s in the doors. The panels are a snap to get out, just a few screws and the door panel lifts up and out. The tough one was the far rear. that one took a lot of time but it was worth it. You can use other sizes if you make a panel to fill in the gaps. It takes very little to upgrade these POS speakers. I have the top of the line 6 disk changer from Ford and it is still a joke. I had to retain the deck due to the DVD but I am getting close to wiring that up seperate and getting something with XM capabilities. I have 2 10" subs, 6 replacement speakers and two amps, one for the speakers and one for the subs. I ran the back door and rear panel speakers in series. It is so worth the time and effort, the amount of room in the truck makes for great sound and some serious bass.

Re: door speakers

WHen my in-dash factory 6 CD changer started changing tracks by itself I took to the Audio shop. It was out of warranty. Needless to say the tech said that the unit was about to die. Said they see these units pretty often.

I decided to upgrade to a Pioneer CD/XM radio unit with Pioneer 6x8 inch speakers in all the doors. It made a world of difference in the sound. The 6x8 speakers were a perfect replacement fit. No modifications needed. When I looked at the OEM speakers its clear they are a joke.

Re: door speakers

The speakers I put in were Pioneer, model TS-A6880R

They are 4-way speakers, 6 8 inches, rated at 240 watts

They are custom fit for Fords.

I got them at BB for $100/pair

Got two pair.

Install was painless. A perfect fit.

Re: door speakers

If you pulled all the factory speakers, are they all the same? The Expedition with the Mach system used the good speakers up front and the standard speakers in the rear. Wondering if the Ex is the same....

Re: door speakers

So here is a question from the electrically ignorant. If I choose to replace the speakers with Pioneers like jpbrake, is there any extra wiring I need to do, or are the speakers plug and play. Also, does the stock Ford 6-disc deck have enough power to push the Pioneers?

Re: door speakers

CobraMike,
if it's anything like when I replaced the 4 speakers in my last truck - a Dodge - no problem pushing the Pioneers. I can't imagine any less power from the Ford stock radio's.
As to wiring, I got some adapter plugs from Best Buy that pluged to the stock harness plug on ene end and the other was for the pioneers. I did not have to do this as you can certainly cut off the stock harness and crimp on the appropriate terminals to slide onto the Pioneers. But I did because I did not want to cut the stock harness in case I ever neede to return to the stock set up.

Re: door speakers

So here is a question for the speaker gurus! I went to Ultimate Electronics and Car Toys this weekend and both places told me that a round speaker actually gives better sound compared to an elliptical speaker like the Pioneer TS-A6880R. Something about a round speaker pulling on a round coil vs. an elliptical speaker pulling on a round coil. Anyway they pointed me to the Infinity 5002i, which is a round 5.25" speaker. They said to install it you can just use adapter plates in the doors. So I looked at the specs and the Pioneers are 50W nominal,240W max, and a range of 30Hz-30kHz. The Infinitys are 45W nominal,135W max, and a range of 60Hz-21kHz. They also said that unless you are trying to bust your ear drums max voltage doesn't matter, just nominal. So give me your opinions. By the way, they are the same price. Thanks!

Re: door speakers

I doubt any of us could tell any difference in a top line speaker while drving in this big honkin' diesel truck.

My feelings? just buy what you see at the store. Anything is better than the stock speakers.
