doors rattle and clank - easy fix

My doors were getting to where they rattled and clicked when I went over the sightest bump. I was really getting irritated; and whining about my expensive truck that was just way to noisey. I was just about to adjust the latches and maybe replace the gaskets when I realized what had happened. There are "little rubber bumbers at each corner (top & bottom) of the doors, all four of them. I had lost the top bumpers on three doors and the lower bumpers on two. Ford house actually had them in stock. Three bucks and no more rattle. You might want to consider a little dab of adhesive when you put in the new ones, so they don't fall or get rubbed off as easy.

Later,

Jeff

Re: doors rattle and clank - easy fix

I have pulled these off while towel drying the inside of the doors, as well as the ones on the fuel filling door. If you take your EX to a car wash where others dry it, you might want to look to see if they are still there.

Re: doors rattle and clank - easy fix

If you really want to quiet the doors down spray some silicone lube on a rag and wipe the weather strips with it. The annoying door squeak will disappear. Missing door bumpers will cause door rattles.

Re: doors rattle and clank - easy fix

Anyone with a pic of what to look for? My X doors rattle like crazy. I always assumed it was the interior panel rattling and just accepted it. I would love to quite mine down, or check and see if mine are missing? Anyone have a part number for them also? I am also considering doing the 1/4" tubing in the seals also to help. Thx.

Re: doors rattle and clank - easy fix

Danny, I don't know when I'll get around to posting pics. Just go by a dealer and look at a new X or look at yours for whats missing. Open the drivers door and look up at the top corner. You should see a bumper within an inch or so of the corner. If you see a hole in the door sheet metal thats about a quarter inch in diameter; thats the mounting hole for the bumber! If you look at the body side of the door opening across from the mounting hole, you will see a circular area about the size of a quarter that is where the bumper rubs. Even if the bumper is gone you can probably can see the rub mark where it used to make contact when the door is closed. At the lower corner of the door is another bumber. The lower bumbers are larger in diameter and are thicker than the upper ones (at least on my 01) I may be able to post the part numbers later tonight, but my counter man didn't have any trouble finding the numbers by just looking at the parts diagrams of the doors (inner view). Now if I could just figure out how to keep the rear vent windows from rattling like a can full of marbles! I really like to keep them open in mild weather, but man to they rattle.

Later, Jeff

Wonder what causes some rear vents to rattle and some not?? Mine are totally quiet, even on some rough surface roads.

I think mine are quiet, but maybe I just cant here them over my doors !

Thanks guys for the description, no need for the pics! I went home and looked right away. I had two on each front door, the bottom and middle, but both were missing the top ones! Are we supposed to have three of them on the rear doors (for passengers, not the back barn doors) as well? In my excitement, I forgot to check them. Thanks, again.
