Dusted turbo

I have a 2000 X that is in the shop for warranty work, rear main and tranny pump seal leak. Also hada leak towards the rear of the engine that I had them look at/repair. Turns out the pedastal(sp) is leaking and the turbo has been dusted and will not be covered under warranty!!! The previous owner lived in Central Alaska, about 150 miles or so from Fairbanks, on a dirt road, that explians the turbo "dusting". The stealership said I have a "Stage 1" airbox and the airfilter lifts up in the middle and allows dust to enter the Turbo, they said I need a "stage 4" Airbox...read another $280 Then the old mechanic shows up and says the Turbo can be replaced under warranty, the loud whistle I have been hearing is a bearing going bad and there was excessive play in the turbine wheel, so they could condem it on that basis vs the dusted thing, they said there has been some dust run through it, but not that bad. I can only hope they warranty it!!$800 is a lot...but the wife is worth it!!! Has anyone heard of the Stage 4 airbox? The Ford PN is 2U2Z-9K635-AA, looks sexy as *&$&%$@#%$ More later Thanks

Re: Dusted turbo

Their yanking your leg. If the engine ingested that much dirt the #6 cylinder would be grooved. If the turbo is bad because of a bad air box why is that your fault you did not design or build the truck. Wait to see what they say then if they don't cover it under warranty challenge them on it.

Re: Dusted turbo

They called today and they will cover the turbo, but the pedastal is not covered under warranty $420 plus labor ($83hr) The Ford number for the airbox is what I got from the Parts counter, they had a brochure on it on their counter. They call it AIS filter system or something close to that!!! Hope to get it back tomorrow!!

Yeap the AIS was what I was guessing they call a stage 4,they are the stock air filter setup on the 6.0L PowerStroke engines.

The AIS kit for 7.3L can be had from FPN for about $189

The AIS is a Ford heavy duty filter for dust/dirt and not a performance filter like an AFE or alike.

Just food for thought unless the dealer says you buy the AIS now and we'll take care of the turbo

Re: Dusted turbo

When I went in to look at the turbo they had already replaced the rear main and the tranny pump seal, i wouldn't have believed except i seen the old seals on the bench w/the seals drivers and tools all over the place. The truck runs really good now except we had -58 this morning, so everything is a little cold!!!

How do you still have warranty on a 00'? Mine was put in service in October of 99' so my warranty is all gone (5 years). You might check into a Tymar intake system or other after market brands rather than the Ford AIS system. I had some work done on my turbo at Seekins when mine was still under warranty and they did not say anything about my Tymar system.

What is wrong with the pedestal? Leaking, there are seal kits available for this from Ford. I always thought the pedestal was covered. Have them show it to you in the 7.3 warranty book. You will need the basic part number for the part and the book lists all the part numbers that are covered.
Sounds fishy to me.

Re: Dusted turbo

I bought mine used from Seekins, I bought the extended care warrenty. It runs out at 99,800 miles, we have 93K on it now. The pedestal is not on the list of covered items. The truck was put into service in 11/99, and it was Dec 04 when we brought it in, so the 5yr 100K warrenty ran out. The pedestal was worn beyond rebuild, so I was told. I only bought the warrenty when they refused to repair some minor things on the truck, and because the truck had about 45K miles going from Central to Fairbanks. Seekins has since regretted their decision I go in every couple months with a list of things for them to repair. If I paid for a warrenty, they will fix it. They got me for about a grand so far( pedestal, and the deductables) but they have about 6500 in it. I will check to see if it should have been under warrenty. Thanks for all the info

Re: Dusted turbo

Stinkins is good at avoiding the warranty issue. They will tell you it is not covered every time unless you point it out. It seems like when you prove that it is under warranty they decide nothing is wrong but if you take it to them once the warranty is all gone they will tell you that you need a whole new engine. After dealing with them on a few warranty issues I am kinda glad that mine is out of warranty and that all my repairs are now done at home. I may be slow at repairing things but at least I know it was done to my satisfaction when it is done. You should check closely on the pedestal warranty because I remember going around with them on warranty on my pedestal seal when I took it in for missing turbo bolts. They ended up covering it but it was a bit of a battle..
