Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

Just had my first real problem. My wife was in the X following me in the motorhome going down a steep grade at a low speed, maybe 25-30 mph. Without warning the engine quit. She radioed me with a little panic in her voice, but she managed to steer and brake to a stop. It started after two tries and was fine the rest of the trip. No engine light, though. Does that mean no code was set? I'd like to get a code reader myself as a trip to the dealer is painful with car switching and rides to work etc., does anyone know where to get one? Thanks.

Dan

Re: Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

Rick, Yes, the engine died instantly with no other symptoms. Is the CPS hard to replace? Expensive? Would the dealer be able to see whether it is bad or not (a code set)? Do you know where I can get the code reader?

You said your X did the same. Did you replace the CPS?

Thanks.

Re: Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

Already been there. CPS died on my wife in traffic the first time and restarted after 4-5 tries. Second time it died on me in traffic then would start and die in gear. Took it to the dealer and it did throw a code on the PCM and 1 hour later was back on the road. The part from a dealer is about 200.00 . Replacement is not that hard. According to the dealer , these things go when they feel like it. I've put 6000 miles on it since and no problems yet.

Re: Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

Took the X in to the dealer today - no code set by the computer, so no action by dealer. Can anyone tell me where the CPS is, and is it something that can become dirty but then cleaned? I don't know what to do but wait for the next time my wife calls me because it died on the freeway somewhere. I don't feel she is very safe now driving something this unreliable. Thanks.

Re: Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

The CPS is not hard to replace. It's beside the crankshaft pulley at the front of your engine. If you want to steal one from the truck guys go to your International dealer and buy it ( like me, CPS for $92.67 ). Definately sounds like classic CPS symptoms. The part number for International should be 1825899C93 and you'll need a 10 mm (preferably 6 pt.) socket.

Re: Engine died - where do I get a code scanner/reader?

The only thing I have had happen to me was after being in home depot for an hour and went to start the truck and no-go, the engine would crank but dimed the lights and no attempt to fire up, so I called roadside assist. and while waiting I called my buddy Richard who is also my service advisor, after a few mins. with him we both agreed it sounded like the batteries so I popped the hood and was able to move the terminals on the passengerside battery. I twisted them a little bit tightend them and it fired right up, I then did the same on the other battery and called road side cancel. This was with only 5k on the truck. I guess call it a heads up.
