enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

I'll try here, I tried in another forum here but it seemed they only danced around what I asked.

How does one mod the fuel filler neck to take big rig nozzles?? Mine has a plastic neck that the cap screws into with a metal brass colored flapper thingy under it. It almost looks like if I were to cut anything to enlarge, that the cap might not work properly. And what would I do with the brass looking flappy thing???

It sure would be nice to use the large nozzles to fill with, not that it takes that long now.

Thanks,

Paul B

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

Paul,

Maybe the 03 filler neck will fit. Mine has no flapper and I understand that the big fillers will work with it. Keep in mind that that the last few gallons are still really sloooooow. About 10 min to get the fuel to be visible in the filler pipe (after it first clicks off). Fix this also by doing a 'Harpoon' which is trim the vent tube inside the tank so you can fill the tank and still vent (allows the foaming to dissapate in the tank). Anyway if you cut out the restriction you still have to remove the filler neck to keep the tank clean.

The 03s have the big mouth. Nice to be able to put in 40 gals in a few minutes Those last few gallons are slooooow.

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

I find this most odd!! I'm driving an 01 4x2 limited, and it has no such restrictions in the filler

I regularly fill at big rig stops with no problems.

Yes, I bought it right off the factory delivery truck (more or less). Anyway, I'm the original, and only owner.

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

Mine was a late year build. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

I noticed the tank seems to be bigger than 44 gallons as well. Last week I put in 43.33 and the warning light had yet to come on. The pump clicked off around 40.5 but I just kept jamming it in....

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

I was wondering the same, I have put in 44 gallons before but the last few were not worth the time it took. I have run the DTE to 0 and still made it to the fuel stop.

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

i checked into a new filler neck and they around $196 from the dealer.

i think Toolman's mod is less costly.

this is on my list of things to do.

Re: enlarging fuel filler neck on 01 X

That is outrageous for a stamped out piece of thin pipe with a vent welded on. Looks like maybe pull the pipe and do the hole saw-dremel/grinder thing is the most economical (even if you buy the tools). Looked in mine and it looks like all Ford did was eliminate the restriction part of the sleeve (like they just punched it out - it even has a 1/16" ridge on the inside).

good luck
Jim
