Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I'm having problems starting my 01 PSD Excursion. At first, I would hear this clicking noise which seemed to come from the fuse box under the hood, directly in front of the driver. That stopped for a while, but now when I go to start the Ex, all the lights go dim, it won't turn over and I get the code for low system voltage.

As soon as I remove the key, the interior light goes back on.
I have checked both batteries with a voltmeter and cleaned the contacts. I'm convinced it's not the batteries.

It seems like it's a relay or fuse, but the fuses I've checked seem to be ok.

Any idea where I should start looking/replacing parts?
thanks

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I bet it really is the batteries, especially if they are the originals. I'd suggest having them tested, and replacing both if either test bad. A voltmeter doesn't put enough of a load on them to tell if they are good or not.

Welcome to TDS....

Now it would help now and in the future if you gave a tad bit more info. on your X.
I say it's the batteries too. These beasts need almost full batteries to turn over fast enough to fire things off. Weak batteries and no startie.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I recently had a intermitant rough idle and surging when in cruise control. My truck was at the dealer for 7 days and they replaced my engine wiring harness, the cam sensor and my fuel pressure rugulator. all of the above info., but I still have an intermitant non starting issue. I replaced both batteries and still have the non start issue. Still working on this one. I have a 04 6.0l with only 28K on it in AZ.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I recently went through an intermittent non start issue.
After I got rid of the piece of junk Visteon light duty starter these X's come with, problem solved.

My symptoms were, turn key to start, get a click, keep trying...keeps clicking (one click per key start), then randomly it would fire right up. This was a random problem that slowly got worse.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

Well, just got word from the dealer and after they replaced the CPS, it fired up but runs rough. In addtion the alternator isn't putting out very much and will need to be replaced.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of choice, so they're going to replace the alternator and do a compression test.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I help they gave you an Estimate. I can change my own CPS (I don't that is your problem) for under $75.00 and ten minutes. The ALT for about $250.00 or less in about 15 minutes.

I still think you have a battery, Alt or starter problem.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

I just got my X back today and it was something you wouldn't think of. We checked over all the fuses and so forth and everything was good and we couldn't find a problem. I got sick of looking over the truck so I had it hauled to the Ford dealer here. Hooked up to their computers they found the problem right away. It was the stupid ignition box that went to hell.
I used the truck that morning and afternoon but when work closed there was trouble. It started but shot off right away. It did it again and that was it. Turning the key would just turn the truck over and over and not 1 pop.
Older cars/trucks didn't have all these computers and were much easier to fix. Need a Good Brain to figure them out today.

Re: Ex won't start. Maybe fuse or relay?

Guys I sure am Sick of my FORD. I'm back to where I started. I was hooking up to my trailer so I got out to see how far away I was. I got back in and put it in reverse and hook the hitch up. Now I was going back the trailer into the shop. I put it in reverse and it did not move so I put it in drive and it did not move. I then put it in Park and it shut off. Tried to start it and it just turned over again. To have this problem fixed today I had to pay $535. What a waste of money. I'm sure not going to pay them again tomorrow when it gets towed there.
I think I might just trade this in, once it's fixed, on the NEW CHEVY DIESEL 4 door TRUCK.

Thanks

My best advice to you is to find a good diesel shop.
