I was talking to one of the Ford guys who sells service last night and he said to stay away from the 6.0. It wasn't new news for me though. The four people I know with the 6.0's have had a lot of problems, two have had motor replacements.

My wife daily drives the Excursion but it's towed for my business a few times. It's bone stock with 193K miles and the motor or tranny have never been touched. The fuel mileage is great so we always take it on road trips. We've had a few 3,500 mile road trips on it.

IMO, the best year Powerstroke is the 2000 MY. Last year with forged rods although some 2001's have them they also have the dreaded mechanical diode problem in the tranny. Most say the forged rods are not that important but if you tow a lot, plan to add mods, or plan to drive for a long time they are important. The biggest drawback to the 2000 MY is the cup holders in the center counsil and dash. $75 at Ford and both can be fixed though.

As far as newest and best it would have to be a 03 7.3 X.

No comparrison, get the 6.0 The 7.3 is a great motor and but the 6.0 and the 5spd torqueshift runs circles around the older ones. My 2000 7.3 EX straded more times than either of my 6.0 f350's.

Great info.....am in the market for an Exc and have had a 7.3PSD in my 97. 250 (GREAT)
Still fighting with the 7.3 IDI in my 91 F350 AFTER A YEAR. (MONEY PIT)
Am wanting to unload the 91 350, the 93 cummins, and the 95 E150.
An Exc will do everything for me and clean up my driveway and yard and since I am planning a move to a colder climate.... a 4WD Exc is on the shopping list.

Lots of mechanics like the 6.0 because it keeps them busy. You do the math. Sure, some are good and some are not. Kinda of a hit and miss. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Bought 05 x new. Repaired the bed plates to stop oil leak still loses coolant out the exhaust Im assuming. Im going on a road trip soon and will top off the water and check the hoses then send it in under warranty (45k) Hopefully I can make them do the ARP thing and Ill pay the extra for the studs. Since I didnt like the mileage when I was towing a flatbed trailer with my bike, only 12 at 72, I bought an 00 x at auction. It was used pretty hard from what i saw in the tranny pan. Cooked fluid and 1 inch pieces of clutch, but nice solid shifts. Cant wait to buy some mods for the 7.3 to get better mileage since i dont tow much. The difference between the two is the takeoff and shiofting. The 00 feels like a diesel which I like. The 05 is much quicker but shifts feel really electronical which I hate. There were some issues with slipping but no codes came up while in service now I get a slight hesitation while accelerating steadily. Even though the 00 x has 139k with an abused tranny, and the 05x is still under warranty w/45k I have a feeling that the 00 might stay on the road much much longer.
