The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

I know this because I ran out 5 miles from the station. I was in the UP (Upper Peninsula of MI) and all the stations said their Diesel was frozen (-3) so I had to keep going. I was towing snowmobiles and I had to use one to go get fuel...in a red tank!!! I shut it down the second I felt the power go so it started up and needed to idle about 2 min and I was on my way. I know there are 44 gals because I went and got 5 and then put in 39...thats 44 Never again. -3 on a sled not dressed right is a big mistake..going 80-100 down the side of the road to get the fuel was also a mistake but I had no choice

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

I've actually put 46 gals. in mine. I had 75 miles to empty and somehow in my 18 mile drive to work in traffic the miles to empty went to 11. (which is the same type of traffic it was driven in for the whole tank) But I gaurantee in So. Fla. that none of the diesel was frozen in the bottom of the tank, etc...

BTW, it never sputtered or started to lose power. I would take a random guess that there was probaly another gallon or two left in the bottom of my tank.

Glad you were able to get on your way without probs...

You gotta love the range, 600 to 800 miles to refill depending on conditions

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

I know, the range is great but you need to be able to find fuel. I figured there would be no problem but the temp caught them off guard and some did not even have winter blend yet. Next time I will fill up even if it is at 1/2 tank.

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

In the winter I try not to let any of my vehicles get below half a tank. Running out of fuel in the winter can be deadly. Also, I always treat the diesel even when the fuel station says they've treated it. I've had vehicles gel up twice because I believed the folks at the fuel stop. Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

Last week my wife ran ours out of fuel as the fuel door was frozen shut from the snow blown on it during a recent driveway clearing. I eventually got it re-started and all was fine and 2 days later we were on a major highway and started loosing power like it was out of fuel. Needless to say we were stranded with no heat and temps of 8 deg. Thanks to the sun, entertainment system for the rug rats and Ford Roadside Assistance. Had the X towed to the local dealer. It turned out to be frozen fuel in the fuel lines. They fixed it for free and a added fuel line heater kit under warranty! Anyone heard of the fuel line heater kit? And covered under warranty? (BTW the towing company picked the X up with a flatbed. The insult was it was a brand new Chevy TopKick with a Duramax! Had to hear from the driver the whole way about the Duramax )

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

I am going by memory.

There was a TSB I believe that talked about a kit that the dealer could install if the fuel lines froze on a Excursion or a Super Duty. Anyone rember this?

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

More information. TSB 01-4-4. I found it in the FAQ section of this forum. However, it is for information purposes only; no warranty. It consist of a kit, part number 1C3Z-9J294-AA. This kit appears to heat the return fuel going back to the fuel tank.

Has any one added this kit? Cost? Does it work?

Hope this helps,
John

Frozen Fuel

Well we all agree that California sucks these days as far as crowds and taxes go, but one thing I still like is the weather.

No frozen fuel here in Sacramento, whew!

Re: The Excursion has a 44 gal Tank

After we got the X back it ran fine. We had another really cold snap (in the low single digits) and the X acted like it was going to quit. My wife called from up the street to tell me it sounded like it was going to die but it never did thankfully as we have a steep incline up the drive way and I would hate to push that thing up hill! I put some fuel stabilizer in and took it out all day this last week end and it ran fine. The principal behind the heater is that it routes the heater bypass hose into a chamber that warms the fuel comming into the filter (after the coolant warms). I'm a little skeptical as this is just before the engine and if the fuel gels wouldn't it also gel in the lines from the fuel tank to the filter and possibly never get there?
As I stated earlier this was covered under warranty (Luck me!) and I have the paper work to prove it. The only down fall is the 7.3L Power Stroke cover that is normally on the engine is now MIA! Need to see if I can get that back other wise someone may mistake it as a V6 gas motor !
BTW here is a link to the kit that was installed on my X. Click here
