Excursion hitch

My 2001 x has a rusted out hitch and I can't find a fit guide from any manufacturer that list the x. Has anyone had a problem with the hitch rusting behind the receiver, mine has rusted to about half the original thickness. Any info on a replacement would be great.

Re: Excursion hitch

To my knowledge no hitch manufactures make a hitch for the Excursions except for Pullrite and there big bucks, see my signature pics. All the Excursions came from the factory with a hitch and it was a part of the blocker beam technology for the Excursions so it was senseless for a hitch manufacture to produce one. You will have to get a new hitch from Ford or have yours rebuilt. My question is if the trailer hitch is rotted out what is the rest of the Excursion like??

Re: Excursion hitch

It is a riveted on unit because it is a part of the safety feature of the truck, It has to be there, like the crash bar behind the valance in the front. No one makes one as economical as OEM. It will fit perfect. The problem is getting the old one off. The best way is heat but you are awful close to the fuel tank so most will chisel them off. I am constantly sanding and painting mine, if i could sand blast it I would rhino line it.

Re: Excursion hitch

there are bolted on with some of the bolts having head that snap off when torqued corectely. you can grind the heads off, drill them out or pull the fuel tank and burn them off with a torch. I drilled mine out and replaced the bolts and speed nuts with parts from ford so you can easily take them off, sounds like you need to get a new one coat it wiot POR15 same for your whole truck

Ouch! How much are they from the dealer. I wonder what the difference in the two are? I should go by there and see, I work in Costa Mesa.

Re: Excursion hitch

well, ya it's expensive. I believe the price includes getting the old one off. Not sure. I was debating getting one for my X because I have in excess of 1200# TW.

Google them and find out.

Re: Excursion hitch

I know the OEM hitch is a pain to get off, I heard my buddies at the dealer whinning when they did mine, twice! They used a torch to get the bolts off.

Re: Excursion hitch

I did mine by starting out with a small drill bit in the center of the one time bolt head, the I kept using bigger and bigger bits. you only have to drill as deep as the head of the one time one way bolt and then give it a good whack with a BFH. note run the other bolt out with an air impact then lightly put it back in before working on the one time bolt.

I am pretty good with a torch and with the tank out of the way I could get those bolts out in less then 5 minutes.

Re: Excursion hitch

The Ford service manual states to drill out the torque bolts (there are 2)and chisel the heads off. They should never have to use a torch.
