Excursion tire pressure

This is my first Excursion. Any Idea what tire pressure to run? Mine came with Pirelli's at 90 pounds. I reduced them to 65 pounds. Also I posted a shock question and received no replies. Bilstein shows shocks for 99-2001 Excursions but 2002 and 2003 are not listed. Is there a difference between a 2003 and a 2001 and will the same shock fit? I have 2WD?

Re: Excursion tire pressure

roofeditor:
While I have not taken delivery of my Excursion as of yet, what I would recommend is to look at the fuel door where Ford normally post a recommended tire pressure for the front and back tires and use this as a minimum when not towing. Do a little testing and see what feels best for you.

Please post what you determine is best as I will be in your shoes in April.

Re: Excursion tire pressure

royc. On the door it says something stupid like 45 pounds which is too low. I'm at 60 now and it rides real nice which is what I ran on my Dodge Cummins with same rated tires. I think the 45 is the minimum and 80 is the max. The only time I ever ran 80 in the Dodge was when pulling a really big heavy trailer. I like 60, not mushy and not real hard. PS you will like the EX 6.0, mine is perfect and so smooth you would think you are in a real nice gasser except you will get about 18 MPG. Try that in a gasser!

You need F rated tires to run that PSI. What does your sidewall say ?

Re: Excursion tire pressure

X's come with "D" rated tires. Check your sidewall, but I bet that the maximum pressure is 65 psi. "E" rated tires will take 85 psi, which is probably what your Dodge had.

The factory pressure (45/55) is what the Ford engineers recommend for the best comfort, at least to their butts. If you like a firmer tire/ride, crank up the air, but do not exceed the max. pressure listed on the sidewall. I intend to run mine up to above the factory recommendations while towing.

Regarding the shocks, www.shockwarehouse.com shows the same shocks for 2000 and 2002 2WD X's.

Front - Bilstein BE-56206-HO, Edelbrock IAS E33225
Rear - Bilstein BE-56207-HO, Edelbrock IAS E34225

I have Rancho RSX's coming for my '03 from Sam's Offroad, but mine is a 4x4, which uses a longer shock.

My bet is that anything that fits an '01 fits an '03. Ford switched out to new LST shocks as a running '03 change. The LST are supposed to be the same or similar to the Rancho RSX. Check to see what you have before automatically changing out (unless you do not like what you have). The LST's are red and white. The old cheap crap shocks are black. My truck was built in October and has the cheapo's on it.

Re: Excursion tire pressure

I can't speak to whether I have E or D because I don't know without looking, but I do know they are 80psi max. I run mine at 60/60 unless towing and then I run 65 Rear/60Front.

Regards,
Dave

Re: Excursion tire pressure

Typical factory tires on the Excursion are D range rated; 65 psi maximum per the sidewalls. E range tires, which I will be putting on after the Firestones wear out, are 80 psi maximum per the sidewalls.

Hope this helps,

Re: Excursion tire pressure

The tires that came with the Excursion were Pirelli (E)and the pressure was set at 90! Now at 60 it rides much better. Thanks for the shock answer. My new Eddie built 17 Jan 2003 has the black ones which if I understand correctly are not a rancho type. Any opinions on Bilstein VS Rancho. I've had them both and I liked the adjustment on the Rancho 9000's but thought the Bilstein's controlled the little bumps better. Only my opinion and I welcome others. The Monroe Magnum's I tried were good for 20,000 max and that was it!

Re: Excursion tire pressure

The Ford spec book for the '03 X (published in September '02) shows the rear sway bar and new shocks being standard on all '03 X's. We all now know that the sway bars were all left at the loading dock (a cost cutting move, I am sure). It now looks like the LST shocks were a "running" change. Someone must have gotten a good deal on those cheap black shocks and bought a ton of them. Well it cost me $150 for my rear Hellwig sway bar and another $200 for the Rancho's. I figure Ford owes me $350. I will throw in the labor for free.

J.D. Powers just sent me a 6 page customer satisfaction survey on the X. I let Ford have it. Guess that is how I will get my $350 back.

I went with the Rancho RSX's because the adjustability of the 9000s was not that important to me. Everybody seems to like the 9000s, but they were $20 more than the RSX's. The RSX's were the "latest" technology 4 years ago, so figure that they are still pretty good. I also read some good posts on the Monroe Reflex, and the RSX is the same shock painted white. Both are made in the same plant in Nebraska. The Rancho version was actually introduced first.

I opted not to get the Bilsteins for 2 reason, more expensive ($50 vs. $65) and the Bilsteins do not have the reflex valve in them like the RSX (and the Edelbrokk IAS). I want a firm ride, but I do not want bumps to shake out my fillings. The reflex valve sounded good to me, so I decided to give them a try. Time will tell.

Some people think that the Bilsteins are a little too firm. I guess if you go with the 9000s, you can adjust it any way that you want it. If you are going to do a lot of mixed driving (unloaded/loaded w/trailer) then the 9000s may be what you need.

Re: Excursion tire pressure

I keep mine at 55 all around and 65 on the rears when towing.

As for shocks... I bought a set of ProComp MX-6 which I use the rears. For the fronts, I got Monroe Reflex from "No Talent Bastards" (aka NTB) for $55.95 each installed. They are the same as the Rancho RSX. Monroe makes Ranchos and Pro Comp. I have a 2wd also, and love the way it handles now!

Re: Excursion tire pressure

I set the air pressure on my front and rear tires (285's) so that the center of the wheels are the same distance from the ground. I came up with only a 2psi split between front and rear pressure, unloaded. The fronts are 2psi higher. Dale
