Can anyone answer this question? Take a stock 2001 Excursion PSD and a stock 2001 F250 PSD. Both have the 3.73 rear end. Hook them up to trailers which will give them an equal combined weight and send them up a long steep mountain grade. Should they both perform approximately the same or is there something about the truck that gives it a towing edge over an Excursion?

I factored in the weight difference by adding trailers of different weights that would give them both an equal combined weight. The reason I ask is because there is a mountain I cross frequently and am pushing it to get over it a 40 mph while PSD trucks including my friends can cross it at 65 mph in cruise control even. Its not a matter of add ons- either there is something wrong with my engine that the dealer cant find or a truck can tow better than an X for some reason. Any ideas opinions?

What is limiting you to 40mph? Is it that the X just won't make enough power to exceed 40mph or is it excessive EGT's that forces you to let out or some other factor?
I regularly pull my Fj40 ( about 6500lb total with trailer) listed in my sig on a trailer behind my X. Never had a problem. It actually suprised me with its ability. Ive pulled the same grades with the same trailer and load before with my sister's '00 F350 6sp and 410s and it was about the same MPH over the top ( the 6sp was limited to a lower mph a little by the lower overall gear). Both are stock except the X was regeared for the tire size.
pedal to the metal and 40 mph is all she has in her. I know the trucks do much better so my question is whether that is all I can expect out of an Excursion or do I just have a dud for some reason. The dealer spent all day checking it out and couldnt find anything wrong. From what SupaSized said it must be something with my X??

humber, When you get it figured out please let me know. I have been having the same trouble. I have complained to f**d many times. My dealershsip has been very patient with me. The last time I got the vehicle out of the shop it runs like a champ. I have not yet tried to tow with it. According to some of the people I've talked to the Excursion falls under SUV regulations and the vehicle has been detuned for soccer moms and other reasons. Who knows the Truth?
One Interesting side note that the last time that I took my X into the shop I found a computor chip sealed in plastic hanging from my oil dip stick. It seems like some kind of telemetry thing. If any body knows what this is I would like to know.

Rover, are you talking about the fuel/water seperator filter? I changed that about 5,000 miles ago. I have a K&N air filter thats in good shape. This is frustrating- I want to tow that trailer like I know a PSD can.

RedTurbo, According to what SupaSized said it doesnt sound like there is any detuning from the truck to the Excursion. I just talked to a mechanic at an independent truck performance shop and he said there is definately something wrong if a PSD wont tow my trailer more than 40mph over that mountain (its not exactly Pikes Peak).

Are the pickups that you are running against, similarly modified?
I can tell you that my Excursion in stock or modified comparisons, is competitive with similar F250/F350 PSD units. You might want to check your exhaust system and especially your muffler.
Tell us what you are getting for rpm, EGT, and boost when under that heavy load (how much does it weigh anyhow?).
Also can you get an unloaded 0 to 60 mph elapsed time.
Do you have/not have a 'boost tube' added to your MAP sensor or wastegate control.
The Excursion powertrain is NOT detuned, when compared with same year pickups with automatics. I have been told the main reason for the different PCM codes, is that our units have ABS brakes and Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) standard, and do not have PTO or Auxiliary Idle Control or dual alternator options. There may be minor variations in transmission shifting parameters, but that is dynamically adjusted anyway.

Excursion PSD, A pickup with no mods can probably pull a trailer up that hill at 70mph. My combined weight is 15,500. mods are 4" cat-back system with see thru muffler, diablo trans valve,K&N air filter, no boost tube. Full force up the hill: rpm 2700, boost 17, egt 900 post turbo, 40mph max. Never tried a 0-60 unloaded. I'll have to try that tomorrow am on the way to work. If I remember to do it I'll let you know the results. thanks

I had the same thing; discovered just after purchase. No one at dealer or on this forum seemed to know what it is for. I took it off and put away in case I ever need it (as if I could find it!).
Towing with Excursion? Oh yeah! I tow a 33' TT that weighs in at 9,200 lbs. loaded. I pulled all over the Smokey Mountains and rarely dropped under 60mph. The only mods that add power are a PPIII and Dynomax muffler.
