I'm a modest poster here, but fequently browse the threads. I don't post much because I never have any problems with my 1996 F250 7.3. She's got 215K and is still going strong.
However, with the extended bed and the single window topper on the back it has earned the nick name "white whale" around the office. I'm thinking of stepping up (or maybe just over) to an X to increase my chick appeal
My question is regarding transmissions. I smoked the E4OD I have in my current buggy at around 150K and now know those trannys have inherent problems. I’m looking at X’s in the 00' and 01’ year range. I’m kind of impartial to the 7.3 not to mention I think they will be cheaper.
What transmission is standard around this year, which type is preferable?
Is the torque shift I read about out there this early or did it come out later?
I want to be able to tow in OD!! Is this a reality?
I’m sure like anything there are a number of different opinions on this topic, I just want to avoid getting a truck with a weak link in it like I have now.
Re: Excursion Transmissions - what years/which models
All X's with the 7.3 (prior to mid-2003 X's with the 6.0) have the 4R100, which is a later (and I think) improved version of the 4EOD. All 6.0s have the TS 5R110.
My '99 had a 7.3 with the 4R100. I never towed without OD. Same in my '03. I never turn OD off.
Re: Excursion Transmissions - what years/which models
I had a 22' enclosed car hauler that I towed with my '99.
I now have a 24' enclosed car hauler with a 7' ceiling (needed the extra foot to get my '48 Dodge p/u in). With the extra height, I put a sloped front nose on it. Still like dragging a brick throught the air.
My max load is about 8000-8500 lbs.
My '03 has the 7.3 with the 4R100. The tranny knows what to do. Leave it in OD unless it is shifting in and out a lot. In that situation, turn OD off.
Re: Excursion Transmissions - what years/which models
I have a 2000 X with 104,000 on the odo and towed my boat last year always in OD with no issues. It would down shift if it needed to on steep grades. My boat & trailer weigh in around 7-8K loaded. I would also have the third seat out of the X and have it loaded to the ceiling with lake "stuff". It did great last year and so far no tranny problems...knock on wood. I figure that with what I paid...under $22,000 when I bought it with 78,000 on it that if the tranny goes south I will replace it and keep going and still be ahead of the game over paying what they want for a new one which to me looks almost identical to mine!!
