Just got off the phone with my diesel tech. Evidently, the Excursions come from the factory with the mileage computer not programed with the correct tire size. Of course, this will cause the readings to be inaccurate.

All SD's come with the same tire size and are all programmed with the same rev's per mile outta the factory. There may be some out there that were incorrectly programmed but mine was right before I went to 601 revs per mile. You can recalibrate the speedpo/trip computer with revs per mile or tire size. Rev's per mile is more accurate as tire companies measure slightly different sometimes.
It's only the dealer that can reprogram right?????
Mine is off but not too bad.
Indicated MPH 77 and GPS says 75.
Seems like somebody should be after Ford for this.
My 2000 was reading fast too.
Adds up when it comes to warranty time....
Most OE speedo's average a little higher than actual. Stock mine GPS'd exactly on at all speeds up to 80 mph. I haven't checked since the reprogram though. I guess thats a "to do" during thanksgiving.
I have paced my Ex with another truck on the freeway... the speedo was correct. I just made a trip to Colorado and back with a GPS on board. The speedo and the GPS were dead on. My problem is with the tach. My tach has always read about 200 rpms higher than any other truck I have seen with 3.73 gears and stock tires.
Any one out there know of a way to re-calibrate the tach?
I have checked my mileage on a measured mile and with the GY305's and it has always been 1.1 mi. I haven't noticed any impact on the shift points on the tranny. The mechanic told me the tires would have to be 37" to make a difference on the shifting.

scott, your mechanic is incorrect. 295's and 315's definitely affect your shifting. They cause the engine to lug, tranny downshifts frequently, t/c is less effective, and most improtantly your ABS system comes on too early!! Drive around for a week before getting it reprogrammed and you will see the difference.
