Excursion weight ratio???

Anyone know the weight ratio of the stock Excursion? I am wondering just how much of the 8140# tank is resting on the front two tires........

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

You May be in for a surprise as I was, there is less than a 100#s difference in the front to rear. The front does weigh a bit more when empty but not by much. a full tank a just a little gear you are at 50% 50%. Don't ask me what the heck is back there that adds up, it doesn't sound right but others have scaled out about the same.

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

Works for me, the total weight adds up really fast........ I just seem to be finding signs that my tires have been overloaded and thought maybe it was because the combined capacity of the front two wasn't enough to carry the weight - guess that isn't my problem......

Thanks for your input........ BTW, is there a spec I could look up somewhere?

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

Interesting. I weighed my stock 4x4 PSD X on our electronic scales at the trucking company where I worked. With roughly a 1/2 tank diesel and my fat butt out of the truck it weighed...

Total = 7,920# = 100 %

Front axle = 4020# = 50.75%
Rear axle = 3900# = 49.25%

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

If the weight is 50/50, why the 50 lbs front and 55 lbs rear tire pressure? I run 52 and 52....

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

Weight transfer when braking? On my 4wd ex with 285's, after measuring to get equal axle center distance to the ground, I have 2 psi more in the front than the rear. Dale

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

My REAL question is......... why the 'D' rated tires? The tank weighs 8140# - that isn't light. My experience has been that my tires seem to be pushed too close to their max rating and tend to overheat and change shape on long trips causing it to develop an ever-increasing shake at speed. More pronounced in the summer and almost non-existent in the winter........... Hmmmmmmm..........

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

My guess - Ford wanted the softer "Soccer" mom ride. Thus, the soft springs and tires. E load range tires on the F250 but load range D tires on the Excursion. The F250 weighs less empty than the Excursion but have similar maximum weights.

Now Ford/Firestone are switching to E load range tires.

What is next?

Hope this helps,
John

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

My Ex came with E rated tires. BFG Rugged Trail or something like that. Seem like very good tires thus far. Max 80psi.

Re: Excursion weight ratio???

Looks like they learned their lesson for the '03 version - my '01 came with D rated tires - I sold them to a guy with a Super Duty and he blew all four on a trip. Guess we both learned something there..............
