I had a expedition owner say that to me yesterday when I told them I had a X. I told them no ,"its a deisel and gets 20 mpg on the highway". He didn't know a deisel was offered in the X, and told me he tows a 23 ft. boat with his expedition at 8 mpg and struggles.Said he gets 13 average not towing, which i believe because thats all I got out of my 97 and 99 before i switched to the x in 2000. It doesn't use gas so it would never be a gas hog!Kinda remindes me I better get them spark plugs changed, keep it tuned up for milage.
I get that a lot too. People kind of act tripped-up when I tell them what it is and what it gets. There are so many real gas hogs around here it's not even funny so they sometimes like to jab at others they "think" are worse, I guess to make them feel less guilty.
The ones that really get me are the Mom's that drive their Escalade's, Navigators, H2's, (Tahoe's, Expeditions for the poor folk ) 2-3 blocks to pick up their kids at school. Then sitting in the drive will sit with the engine running for 10-15-20 minutes keeping nice and comfy even in nice cool temps. Sadly it's a lot of my daughters friends Mom's that do it, and some are pretty hot so I just enjoy.
And they don't understand that their "gas hog" is not only burning gas sitting there, but polluting worse.
I like to pull up and Quick Stop" it so it runs with the A/C on for 1-2 minutes while I run in and get my daughter. Less polution but they are annoyed by the little bit of smell they may get.

My self-righteous liberal brothers and sisters gave me grief when they saw my "evil big SUV". They bit their tongues(for once in their life) after I told them what mileage I got which was equal to the minivans they had.
Of course one sister has 2 kids that have an old 60's Chevy and an 80's Oldmsmobile sitting in their driveway. One has a HUGE V8 and the other an inline 6. But of course my SUV is "Evil"......... HUH?!
Fortunately I will never understand their "logic".

Had the same sort of conversation w/ a liberal friend of mine the other day. I always love it when you confront a liberal w/ reason - like that it would certainly take less of the Earth's resources and energy to produce 1 Excursion than the 2 Caravans he'll have to buy before the Excursion wears out. And I can carry 2 more people AND their luggage - much higher ppmpg (per person mpg). And biodiesel will probably become a viable alternative fuel long before anything else - and it can be made from renewable or abundant resources.
Net-Net is that Ford did a lousy job of marketing what should have been their flagship product! They never should have used the gas engines and they let the liberal wackos drive the public's perception of the Excursion. I can't belive how "acceptable" it seems for someone to drive an Expedition or Yukon, both of which get less mpg.
Bought my new X after being totally fed up with our Dodge Caravan in the shop every other month - with the family plan pricing, the X works out to be just barely more per month than the Caravan was costing me. I don't think we ever got more than 16 mpg in the Caravan.
And safety? - when you get thru all the hype Dodge makes about the Caravan's 5-Star safety rating, it's really only for front end collisions. Our X is a beatiful Torreador Red and it gets noticed. I say that avoiding an accident is much more environmentally friendly than surviving one - and it's also more humane. Who could doubt you're much safer in the X?
Better mpg, better safety, more utility (trailer, etc), more durable, only slightly more cost monthly, and much less "hassle-factor" (take van to shop, rental while being repaired, etc.) - who cares what an intellectually lazy drone liberal thinks?!

Yes, I know what you mean. People can't beleive when I tell them I get 21 mph hwy and 17 mpg city. Not to mention, if we run out of diesel, we can just go down to the local fryers and pick up some french fry greese, strain it, and poor it in, biodiesel mm-mm good. All the while, 9 passenger seating, including everyone's luggage, 1.5' ground clearance, 970 mile range on 44 gallons, 325 hp and 560 torgue, in the safest vehicle on the road, not to mention its the biggest, and the ability to tow 11,000 lbs., did I stutter? The only thing the "X" needs is an armored vehicle package and a 50mm on top just incase. Uhg, Uhg, Uhg!!! Tim Allen days.
The only thing that can clean our clocks is the Super F650X. The F650 w/ the excursion body on it. Talk about trucks on roids.
If Ford could have waited a year they would see the H3 take the heat off and maybe keep up the production of the absolute untouchable towing, safety, fuel economy (Diesel), comfort and styling of any SUV on earth. Now throw a lift in here and you own the road, people cower in the shoulder and median when I pass, they all look up like they are watching a plane go by. I just look down and smile. I like to look down on the MILFs.

H3? I still think I see a Jeep Liberty with flares coming down the road when I see one!
Back up a few posts......be aware that bio-diesel and WVO (Waste Veggie Oil) are 2 different things although making bio is usually started with WVO.

The Liberties are catching a bunch of flack right now, and I feel it deserves some of it. It is less than half the size of the X yet doesn't really get that much better economy. I wouldn't take 3 Liberties to one X personally.
Hmm, so this makes me wonder. Does anyone know any real world MPG numbers for minivans? Surely there are some on here that have owned a minivan. How about the diesel Liberty MPG? Consumer Reports (which I know some people hate) had it listed at 13mpg in their last issue discussing the differences between EPA fuel ratings and real world. Just curious.

I have heard the new diesel Liberty, that was supposed to have been the cats meow, has gotten a lot of bad press because of very poor performance and economy.

I tell everyone that is looking at buying a full size SUV to get the X. My van gets 20 mpg., and I figured the X gets the same. You guys all just confirmed it. Maybe in the future I will be looking at one. Will probably keep the van though. 9 seats ain't enough with a basketball team or softball team. I've done a lot of towing with mine. The most was an enclosed trailer holding two cars from Los Angeles to Indy. 80 per hour, no problem on highway 40. But dang, only 11 mpg. Did pull over to the scales in Texas and total weight was 19,985 lbs. Crappy gas millage huh?
Dann
Nearly everyone who finds out that I drive an X makes some comment to the effect of "that thing uses a lot of gas, doesn't it?"
With a straight face I tell them that in the three years I've owned it, I haven't had to put one drop of gasoline in it.
I then enjoy the puzzled look on their faces for several moments before I tell them it is DIESEL.
