you should never have fumes even with the vent winders open unless you have a good tailwind. My opinion after 150K miles of driving an X. I would definitely look at your exhaust system.
I'm on WVO and occasionally get a whiff of exhaust stopped. I have an aftermarket exhaust and assume it is a tight fit. I did not install it though. Maybe I should have it looked at.

with wvo thats a bit more common its basicly a combination of the seals being older the small cracks that air gets in
and the smell of wvo burning is more noticible than diesel so it will be more prominate
my truck running diesel i have the wings open all the time because the exhust dumps out under the bed but hey thats what i get for not getting good exhust
just look for air leaks
blast heat and drive when its cold out that will tell u
then adjust the weather strip
