F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

I am adding F-350 rear springs to the X to help with the tongue weight of our toyhauler. The rating on the F-350 springs is 6830#. The X springs are 5250#. Does the difference in capacity of 1580# get applied the the GVWR? I realize that I am still limited by the 20,000# gross rating. I am just trying to offset the 1300# tongue weight of the toyhauler and the family of 4 in the X. The factory springs are a little lite in the loafers. Note in my sig I have air bags. Thanks Cliff

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

It's an "it depends" question. Are you talking about the physical capability or the legal GVWR? If you're talking about the legal GVWR from what I understand it won't make a bit of difference. In some states you can actually change the GVWR classification by just applying for a heavier rating, but I don't think that's uniform across all states.

Regards,
Dave

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

You are going to love the 350 springs. I put them under mine about 6 months ago and enjoyed a better ride towing or empty since I put them on. Should have been there from the factory!

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

TexasPSDX,

Thanks for responding I was hoping you would. I e-mailed you a while back thanks for the help. I just ordered the springs today from Genuine Ford Parts .com, not a bad price and the springs are new. I also ordered the springs with the auxillary spring. Should have them on next week. I went by the local Ford dealer to look at the F-350 springs and the hitch. The hitch on the F-350 is exactly like the X only rated at 1500,15000#, wonder why? This will really help with my tongue weight on the toyhauler. Thanks Cliff

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

The different rating could also be attributed to the different frame. Although many of the components are the same, the one difference between the X and F250/350 is the frame. The X frame is lighter. But of course you are not putting the weight in a bed which creates a lot of bending of the frame at the cab. If only the frame was the same. Oh well .....

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

My F250's rear leaf springs are toast and was thinking about going to F350 springs. I called the largest Ford parts center in my state and the parts guy advised me not to go with one ton springs because it would put more stress on the rest of the rear end mainly the rear pumpkin. On my passenger side the second leaf from the top is cracked and seperated about an inch and both sides are flat. The parts guy gave me the name and number to a place that custom builds springs for different applications. They either fix/repair the old springs and add a leaf or replace with new. Have to do something and don't want to put 3/4 ton springs back on. Truck has 154K and the springs have been bad for 10's of thousands of miles!

The dealership quoted me $140 per side while another dealership quoted me $204 for the 3/4 ton leafs.

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

??? Added stress to the pumpkin? He didn't explaing himself did he?

The springs are springs. What springs a 250 or 350 has depends on how the truck is equipped. Although the 350 has the added helpers, the 250 will accept the brackets to bolt them up. I can't see how a spring will "add" stress.

The Excursion frame is also predrilled for the overload brackets to mount, at least mine is.

Almost. Its built on a Super Duty chassis. A regular cab short bed chassis. 250s, 350s and Xs use the same frame, just different lengths.

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

The X actually has a higher GVWR than a 250 but less than a 350. But they all have a 20,000 GCWR.

Would this mean that the X has a higher leaf spring capacity rating than the 250, but less than the 350?

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

No, I believe the X has the softest springs on all four corners. Another reason people say the ratings are just a numbers game.

Re: F-350 rear springs and GVWR rating

The X also has 7 cross members instead of the 6 in the 250-350's. I guess cause the box is inclosed in the rear of the X.
