Re: fire extinguisher

Since I am in the "fire" field, I have always carried a fire extinguisher in my vehicles. I have had to use them on five fires in about 20 years of driving covering about 1.5 million miles. I have never had a fire but have stopped to assist others. I always ask before I try to slow down the fire because for some people they would like to see their vehicle go up in flames. Most dry chemical fire extinguishers leave a nasty mess on any surface that is hot. This mess can be hard to impossible to remove.

Now for what I carry in my vehicles. I carry an inexpensive 1A10BC rated, UL listed, all purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher that you can buy at Costco, Sams, Home Depot, Lowes, Wal Mart and similar stores. These type of fire extinguishers are effective and are inexpensive to purchase. It does not pay to refill them, just recycle them after use. (Most of the cylinders are aluminium.) I have had several people or their insurance companies offer to repay me for my fire extinguisher after I extinguished the fire. A 1A10BC rated fire extinguisher is usually big enough for most small vehicle fires when used by a knowledgable person or if the fire is large, then it allows the fire to be kept under control until additional help arrives. I usually leave the fire extinguisher tied up in the trunk or in the case of the Excursion, I have the fire extinguisher sandwinched between the edge of the third seat and the inside of the vehicle. I can get to the fire extinguisher in a hury and I do not have to drill holes for the mounting bracket. I know the fire extinguisher should be in a more secure position, but I do not want to drill any holes if possible.

Remember a fire extinguisher is only as good as the training the person using has and the inspection program the fire extinguisher receives. Fire extinguisher should be installed and maintained in accordance with the National fire Protection Association's Standard number 10 and the manufactures instructions.

Sorry to be so long winded. Hope this helps,
John

I know I can be long winded about a subject I care about. Just do not get me started about my kids or my Excursion.

Re: fire extinguisher

JADFPE I was in the fire brigade at the plant and I understand where you are coming from .

I sure wish we could still get the HALON extinguishers 'cause they dont ruin the elictrical and do not leave a mess like the dry chemical ones do . YES that stuff is 9 divffrent kinds of he$$ to cleaan up . Been there and done that more than once and believe you me once is enough for a lifetime .

Take care bro.,

Re: fire extinguisher

H ED S - You are correct. Halon 1211 fire extinguishers were/are great except under windy conditions. Nothing better is still air. I still have one or two of them lying around.

Take care,
John
