First Mods to my X

I am going to do an cold air intake, which this is pretty straight forward.

I am also going to cut out the muffler and run straight pipes. Any problems with doing this?

And noise isnt a problem.

Re: First Mods to my X

I have not cut my muffler off but others on here have had mixed opinions. I remember a few threads about this.. I decided agaginst it after reading up on what others disliked about it (noisey, very loud inside, not much preformance gain)

Re: First Mods to my X

Mine is straight piped. Im 34 yrs old, I love it. My wife prefered it with a muffler, and she now does not like the windows down when in the Excursion. My 56 yr old Father thinks it is ridiculous and hates it. Most of the guys I hang with love it, and folks on sidewalks or out in thier yards/porch turn to see what kind of monster tractor trailer is coming up the road with the pipes roaring. At a cruise on the highway, it is barely noticeable. At idle its same as before, but push some pressure on the go peddle and she can get down right obnoxious!

Re: First Mods to my X

You need to check out the 6.0 Aftermarket Forum.

An intake that's got good filtration and good flow is expensive and for the most part, people say they wish they would have saved their money and kept the stock intake. The 6.0 intake is not bad at all.

As far as exhaust, straight piped 6.0's do not sound goo at all, in my opinion. From the outside the driver can't hear how obnoxious the turbo sounds. I like the sound of exhaust, but I don't like a striaght piped 6.0. 7.3 is a different story, that sounds good. (I have just under 600HP in a 540 cid in my boat and I run full open, no baffles or mufflers, straight out the back and I like it! )

I think pulling the muffler woudn't be bad at all, and maybe even pull the cat and keep the muffler would be OK, but the turbo would be loud. I'v got Magnaflow with the CAT in place and it sounds good, but I'd like to get a little more sound, but not the turbo! I can hear the turbo fine as it is now!

Try replacing the muffler with a BTM (Big Truck Muffler) and see how that works. It's prety cheap and should get some better sound without going completly crazy.

BTW, do you realize that removing the CAT is a Federal offense regardless whether your state emmisions tests diesels or not?

Re: First Mods to my X

I think K5 picked up a 00X. I have a 03 with 7.3, no mods so far. Only ones I may consider are Walker BTM and Ford AIS intake. So far I like the way it runs stock.

Re: First Mods to my X

Oh, well if that's the case!!

I have actualy heard a 7.3 in an Excursion (an ex TDS Member) with the BTM and it sounds really good! Nothing like being straightpiped, but sounds really good.

Re: First Mods to my X

My bad, he is right it is a 00 X, and it doesnt have a cat already, it was original sold in Idaho, so all I'll be taking out is the muffler.

Re: First Mods to my X

When I first cut the muffler off of my X it really sounded cool. I really didn't like the small amount of lag that showed up after I did it. Since then put Magnaflow 4" and sounds better and much better response.

Re: First Mods to my X

I put the Aero-Turbine 4040 on my X instead of straight piping it and am really happy with the results.

Re: First Mods to my X

And here is the first mod already done, sounds mean now :bounce: In the end when some money comes around I will probably do the turbo back system from Magnaflow.

Re: First Mods to my X

the 7.3's dont sound as good as the 6.0's with a straight pipe. also just from expierence its runs better with a muffler on. its up to you. if you want attn. youll definatly get it with the straight pipe.

Re: First Mods to my X

Something I just remembered, the 7.3 with the BTM that sounded so good, it also had a new wheel (turbo), so it didn't flutter. I HAVE heard 7.3's straight piped that fluttered and sound bad!
