First pull today "disappointed"

Today I gave my 29 ft TT 8000# a test drag down the expressway. I had a real hard time getting the rig up to 80 mph. I bought the Diesel "X"
to pull the snot out of this trailer and it just didnt do what I wanted. I pulled this trailer with a F250 7.3 before I bought the X just to see if I would be happy with a diesel. The F250 has been reprogramed and that is about it. With the 250 I tested the power at about 80 mph and it had just a ton of power left over. I like to run about 75 mph when I am in tow and the X really has to work to do that. Is the F250 built different than the X and is that why it has more power or is it just the program. I want this X to pull like the vehicle I tested. I should also add that I only have 2300 miles on
the X. The overhead console shows only 7.5 mpg when the F250 was getting 11.5 mpg

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

I have about the same setup as you but do even better than that F250.,13.5-15.5 at that 55.Either you need a little more break in time,go easier on the pedal punching, the TT is alot heavier than you think,or something is wrong with the truck. Also is the F250 a 2wd,or a 4wd? What rr gears? That will make a differance in the milage. numbers.Joe M.

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

#1 issue - A programmer really does make that much difference, turns a dog into a hot rod even at low hp levels. I know, I just pulled mine out to bring it in for warranty and its killing me

#2 issue - They really loosen up at 7500-10K miles

The programmer is the issue, its night and day

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

First; I want to say that no one should be pulling their trailer @ 75mph since stopping that would be quite interesting in an emergency.
That said, get yourself a tuner, 4" exhaust, cold air intake, a wicked wheel, gauges, lots of gauges, and a tranny cooler then off you go. I pull a 29ft 7000lbs trailer and can keep 65mph steady in a 6% grade

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

What RXBike said. Just got back from towing my beast last weekend, 8500lbs on this trip, but it goes up to 9500 depending on what wifey wants to take along. We pulled 65mph without missing a beat and turned in 11.9 on the way out, and 11.5 on the way back. (but the wind was much worse on the way home). I absolutely had to pass a duramax on a grade on the way home and she went up to 70-75 while going up the grade with no problems whatsoever. I think if I towed at 70 or above my mileage would be way below 10mpg though. (just the shape of the trailer and such)

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

It's okay to be disappointed about a stock setup with just a programmer(depending on which one you have)
The Excursions along with the pickups intake and exhaust has to be unplugged big time, upgrade your Turbo Compressor Wheel as well for that'll help quite abit
I agree as well you need some break in time for the engine to loosen up

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

Joe_m The f250 is a 4x4 with 3:73.
What is the latest and greatest programer?
Should I put some more miles on before mods?

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

We had about 3,000 miles on the clock before we started modding our '02 Excursion 7.3L

We opted for the Superchips Microtuner from Dave at Pro Power Parts in Florida.

The 60HP setting is a nice change but the 80HP program is awesome

Be sure to make intake and exhaust upgrades as well as Gauges or a BD X Monitor which is sweet

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

Is it ok to run the 80 hp setting all the time?

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

I tow my 41 ft TT (9,940lb GTWR) at 70 mph in 70 mph zones with no problem and have hit 80 mph with the combo. I think you need more miles to break it in .

No, not if you're towing . .even the 60 is questionable when towing. Plan on getting at a minimum an EGT gauge. More than likely you won't have any problems, but without it you won't know when to back off.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

We run the 80HP program all the time of course we're not towing but when we have to hook up a trailer of substantial weight I'll back it down.

I'll second Dave on the EGT gauge as a minimum for towing with or without a programmer.

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

You will find that the Excursion is considerably heavier than the truck which may be part of it. Also give it some time to break in. Of course a few mods such as big exhaust, air intake, Banks chip etc. can also help you get the X where you want it.

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

At this time I am a little nervous to put to much on her that I could loose the warranty. At least with the programmer I can switch the system back to factory.

Re: First pull today "disappointed"

I have a 1999 F350 7.3 stock and it feels much better then the X just driving around (Power wise that is). The missing 25hp (have the manual in the F350) I'm sure has a lot to do with it as well as that X is heavy (and my X is 4x4 and the F350 is not). I just have about 700 miles so not sure how much better it will get, but down the road a tuner and an EGT will be in order. No problem tooling around town, just need to remember to stop pressing the pedal just to make the turbo sing ;-)
