Re: First "real" tow with my X

[ QUOTE ]
Paul,
th speeds I did the comparison at were the same I was running the Cummins at. And typically they are below the posted speed limit here in Florida. On 95 I was running about 67-68 where the speed limit was 70.
By the way Paul, when you tow your rig, assuming you are using overdrive and cruisecontrol, do you see the speed drop off a little on the overpasses and any downshifting like happened to me? I figure us being neighbors we probably traverse the same overpasses to compare on, even though I am pulling a heavier rig.

thanks.

Depends on the size of the overpass, some do and some don't. Mine does real good at 73 mph. Go figure?

MotionMan,
thanks for the info. I will get in touch with him in the next few days as work aloows. I appreciate the info. Does your particular unit have a model number I need to give him for the Excursion aplication - or I guess he should have that after all the trial and error you guys did - never mind.

Re: First "real" tow with my X

When pulling the steep grades with a stocker 7.3 it'll seem like a dog and the tranny shifts quite abit as we did that when the Excursion was brand new towing some 7k-8k over 1800 miles.

Following the first big tow we worked on the intake, exhaust and electronics then towing was like in cruise control without even knowing a trailer is hooked up.

Our mileage towing over flat land can bring up to 18 mpg at 65-70 mph but once we hit the hills along I-10 between El Paso and Phoenix it'll drop back to 13-15 mpg which isn't too bad I suppose but we don't scream the RPM's either.

The things that made the biggest difference was the grille cool air fed intake,Wicked Wheel and BTM,try mods similar to those and tow again

Re: First "real" tow with my X

I saw a 2mpg increase all the way. I am seeing 12 towing 10,000lbs and 18-19 empty. This may be a little high due to the programer, and yes Joe will remember

Re: First "real" tow with my X

Yes CHP, what is this cold air thing, I assume the BTM is a chip of some sort. You are so right, once the mods were done the truck just pulled like a train and with mine it is as mild of a bump as you can get.

I opened up the fiberglas wall in front of the air intake tube to take all the cool air from the head of the truck,as you can see in this PHOTO I have it taped off to get all the air from the front.

The BTM is short for the Walker brand "Big Truck Muffler" which is a straight thru design muffler,it was only $50 for the muffler which I had a local muffler shop(Not Midas) to install it for $40. Installed Photo

Re: First "real" tow with my X

Cutting that hole helps that much? It looks simple, are you afraid of objects or dirt and water going in there? It looks like it would really gobble air but I am afraid it may injest small birds or even children.

Re: First "real" tow with my X

MotionMan,
I'm not sure if I understand what you meant with the "This may be a little high due to the programer" statement. Are you saying this is what the overhead computer is saying, or did you hand calculate your mileage and are getting the 2 mpg increase hand figuring it? The reason I ask is because if you are going of the computer I would be reluctant to trust it more after using a chip than before as I have been told that the chips/programmers can send the overhead into lala land.

Re: First "real" tow with my X

CHP,
I thought the Wicked Wheel was mostly a benefit to those that were having turbo stalling noises or something to that effect. Are you saying that the W.W. actually is pumping more air into the intake? If so then I could see where it helps.
Thanks.
