Re: First upgrades New user and amsoil bypass filter.
The Amsoil dual bypass kit runs something like $186 wholesale, or about $240 retail. I don't know the part # offhand. You will need to buy a few hoses and either make or buy a mounting bracket as well.
I've done a TON of reading on this topic over the last couple years and especially the last few months. Here's my personal beliefs and understanding as it concerns bypass kits.
1. Superior filtration is paramount for making oil last longer no matter whether you use dino or synthetic oil.
2. The best filter media for oil is toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Therefore, if you are not going to Amsoil I would suggest NOT getting the Amsoil bypass kit, but rather getting a paper bypass kit like Gulf Coast or any of the other 3 or 4 similar systems that many users of this site own.
3. If you are going to Amsoil, you will get the best performance out of the synthetic by having a bypass system. In this case, might as well stick with Amsoil's bypass system.
Here is what I've done personally: I just converted my engine and tranny to Amsoil this weekend. I do not have the bypass kit yet (long story). However, at 7,500 miles I will take off the current filter and replace with the dual bypass system. What I can say is, I converted my pickup with 90K miles about 3 weeks ago with just the crankcase oil to Amsoil (not the tranny, and no bypass kit). It is already getting about 1.5 mpg better mileage!
