Ford Recall

It appears Ford has just recalled 2001 Super Duty Pickups with cruise control (among many other of their rigs) for modification to prevent self immolation. Anyone want chime in as to why this recall should not include my 2001 Excursion with CC?

Re: Ford Recall

What I saw in the press release was:

------
The recall includes 1994-2002 model-years of F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos.
------

Did you see something else?

FYI, the switch was one used during that time period.

Re: Ford Recall

Upon further review, 2001 Super Duties were apparently part of the Jan '05 recall for the same problem.

Here's the quote from that article you linked. It says nothing about superduty's.

"That recall involved some of Ford's biggest money-makers from 2000 model-year F-150 pickup trucks, Expedition and Navigator SUVs and 2001 model-year F-Series Supercrew pickup trucks equipped with cruise control."

Re: Ford Recall

Mastertech,

Since you are obviously vastly more knowledgable than us "plebes", is it your opinion that the cruise control components used in Excursions F-250, etc. are clearly different than those used in the recalled vehicles and, therefore, there is nothing for us here to be worried about?

Thanks,

DC

Opinion doesn't mean anything (sort of ) Either the problem switch was used or it wasn't and according to Ford, it was only used in the above listed vehicles which does not include any Excursions or Super Duties. Same info came out last year when this started hitting the media.

I think we're safe.

BTW, what the heck is a "Plebe"?

Plebian. I believe the term goes back to Greek times, and means something like "commoner".

Re: Ford Recall

1. I thought the reference in the Boston Globe article to "SuperCrew" referred to an F250 model. I have been set straight that that is not correct. I sincerely appreciate that along with all the other contributions made to this site.

2. My post directed to "Mastertech" was intended to acknowledge and honor his obviously vastly greater knowledge base on these vehicles relative to most of us here and ask his opinion regarding something that is potentially pretty serious.

I am at a loss to understand how that post could have been construed as mean spirited, but I am genuinely sorry if I even mildly offended anyone. I certainly would never have intended anything of the sort. Besides, what the heck would I have had to even be irritated about, much less angry? He politely and clearly corrected me without even a hint of editorializing or "piling on".

Nonetheless, I still would appreciate an expert opinion about the CC component issue. Should 2001 PSD Excursion owners consider modifications regardless of whether omniscient Ford, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to issue a recall for "our" vehicles, or not?

(Anyone who has ever survived a fire as I have just can't take this issue lightly. I keep at least two halon hand-held extinguishers in every vehicle, not to mention the onboard systems in the racecars and trailer.)

Re: Ford Recall

The vehicles in recall have full-time 12V applied to the cruise cancel switch on master cylinder. F super duty and excursion do not have 12V applied when ignition switch is not in "run" position.
I guess there exists some very low risk of a leaking switch causing a problem on a running vehicle but the switch on F super duty/Excursion may not be the same switch.
I have never seen an F super duty/excursion mentioned in any reports of fires.

Re: Ford Recall

Thanks Jimmy,

No power to the switch when vehicle is not running seems to rule out any possibility of fires like Expeditions have had.

Really appreciate it.

Re: Ford Recall

As well as the 2000 X I have a 96 F350. Wopuld there be a chance that it would have the same switch as the 150?

Re: Ford Recall

The F250 at 200K miles has never had a CC issue.

However, the X's CC light never comes on but works fine.
