Anyone have a Ford remote start system installed on their Excursion? I am thinking about putting one on my 2005, and I'm wondering if it is a good unit.
I've never had remote start. When you start the truck with it, does the truck stay locked, and do you still have to put the key in the ignition to drive?
I have the CompuStar unit installed on my 2004 Limited. I am not familiar with the Ford unit, but I would highly recommend the CompuStar.
The truck will automatically lock if you start it with the doors unlocked. If someone were to enter the vehicle and step on the brakes or attempt to put it in gear, the engine immediately quits. The vehicle will only run for 20 minutes (gas) or 45 minutes (diesel) each time you remote start it.
WOW,that waz always my complaint with ford.My only goes for 15 min.'s and in the winter it shuts down before it warms up.It takes some heavy BTU's to hear 800 lbs of cast iron and 4 gallons of oil.
I would not recommend the ford system, unless you get the dealer to get you an aftermarket system through a vender.I had an automate in my T/D Burb and you could set it up to an hour and have the truck start and shut down on its own via an internal timmer. It just didn't have any distance with the factory remote.Joe M.
I got the Ford Gold installed as part of the deal at the dealers...
I like it... and actually use it more in the summer than the winter...
Here in Texas A/C is more important to me
it has more features than I ever use... including the turbo cool down...
Only negative for me is that it won't turn on the leather seat heaters in the winter or else I'd use it more !!!!

I have the Gold also. I like it, but I'd also like to have the features that the Ford systems dont' have, like a true turbo cool down. The Ford is just the remote start feature so it shuts off the same time you have the remote start to run. Mines at the default of 10 minutes. I agree too, 10 minutes of idling does not warm it up, even in North Texas. however, I would not want it to run for 45-60 minutes either. If you forget, or get hung up, it's nice knowing it'll shut off in aresonable time.
The primary thing you can get in the aftermarket that you can't with the Ford system, 2 way remote!! You can't tell if the truck "got the message" to start where the 2 ways tell you if it started or not.
Overall, I'm happy ti the Ford system, although the dealer could have installed it better. I've already fixed a wiring problem, and the installer had kno idea what he set for what and told me the owner manual had all the info. Ya, it has the number to the hot line to call
Oh, and the Ford you can set it for instant start, or for 30 second delay. He sai he set it for 30 second delay since it was a diesel. First cold start at 10* at 9000 ft in Colorado and I realized he didn't as the truck attempted standing barrel rolls! I got the top-of-the-line 2-way model and paid $450 installed on the 2004 X. My father-in-law got the entry-level 2-way system and paid less than $300 installed on his 2000 Buick century.
The two-way system allows you to 'querry' the truck as to whether it is locked or unlocked, running or not, etc.
Some of the features I like about this unit are that it actually ''watches" the diesel wait light, and only attempts to start after it goes out. It will also do a 'scheduled' start at a specific time as indicated above, but that's a very DANGEROUS feature unless your vehicle is NEVER EVER EVER garaged!!!
On the unit I have, a little digital timer comes up after the vehicle is started remotely and gives you a countdown from 45 minutes to tell you how long the vehicle will remain running. There is a list of all the features on their website.
Usual disclaimers - I don't work for them, don't own stock, etc....

Family Ride yours should have it.When its running just hold the start button down, you will hear the activation, then remove the ket and it should stay running for the time it is set for.I used it alot for short trips or turbo cool down.Joe M.
