I havent had my 2000 PSD Excursion very long and tonight was the first time I tried to put it in four wheel drive. When I turned the switch on the dash the 4X4 light came on on the dash but nothing happened.
It didnt go into low lock either. I got out and locked in the manual hubs and the four wheel drive worked that way but the dash switch dosnt work. Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

As I found out the hard way, you won't get into low range unless you switch to it while in Neutral, with the brake applied.
As for 4wd, it could be a problem with your hubs, themselves, but it's most likley a vacuum problem, and a lack of vacuum will prevent the hubs from engaging. When you turn on your heater, does air blow out the defrost vents no matter where you set the dial? If so, you've got a vacuum leak or bad vacuum pump.

Most likely the vacuum pump, if the locking hubs put you in 4x4 you are fine and the pump is gone. Easy fix, $50 part. On the low lock, yes it must be in nuetral for in and out.

Where'd you find one for $50? I think mine was $170.

I had the same problem with my X after I bought it (used). The switch on the dash operates a vacume pump on the right inner fender and also ingages the tranfercase VIA motor asm. When the switch is turned on the vacume pump will cycle for about 12 sec. Turn your switch on and then touch the pump asm and feel if is running. If it does run then I would hook up a vacume pump (Hand held unit) to the knuckle asm. and pump it and see if the hub holds a vacume ,do both sides. My guess is it won't hold vacume. If the knuckles don't hold vacume ,time for new seals on the bearing asm. and spindel asm. I did both of mine over the past winter not a big job but installing the spindal seal was a little tricky. Works great now . FJF

Before spending any money on a vacuum pump, inspect the vacuum lines going to the hubs. These are problematic ater a couple years as they dry out and crack or even come off in some cases as mine has twice now.
One way you can tell very easily if the vaccum pump is working is by being able to use your A/C and changing the vent positions (dash vents, windsheild vents, floor vents). It uses the same vaccum pump. To see if you have a vaccum leak put the A/C controls on A/C or Max A/C with the dash vents blowing and try putting the truck into 4Hi, if the dash vents quit blowing and it switches to the defroster vents (windsheild vents) then you have a vaccum leak.
Another thing to consider is, do you have autohubs or manual hubs installed. I had my auto-hubs replaced at the dealer under warranty and they put manual hubs on by mistake, this could be your problem too. (of course I had them switch me to the auto-hubs once I figured it out) The auto-hubs (vaccum actuated) have a grey colored strip in the handle where you twist to lock and they say "auto" and "lock". The manual hubs handle is all black and they say "free" and "lock".
