I just put about 600 miles on my new Excursion. I varied the speed as much as I could these past four days. I went from MD to WV to VA and back to MD. My best mileage was 14.6mpg Do you think this will improve? To be honest I could not tell the difference between a cackling truck and idle knock or a truck that runs fine. I just not have been around that many diesels in my life. Hope things improve as I told my wife we should at least get 16 to 18 mpg....

I did not believe what I was told, but have since seen it with with my own eyes on both our trucks (owned from new) : it takes at *least* 10,000 miles for these engines to break in. Your mileage should steadily creep up the whole way.

I find that my mileage varies greatly according to the grin on my face. If I have a big grin (boost near 17, and egt's of 1100) then my mileage stays in the 14-16 range mixed city/highway. If I drive it very gently keeping my EGT's around 600 all the time and keep my speed between 65 and 70 then I'm seeing 18 or a little better. (all highway) This is with only 2600 on the odometer. I did have one tank a little over 20, but it was with no grin and a constant speed of about 58 mph on a flat interstate.
Regards,
Dave

City driving is right at 12.5 mpg. on the road varies from 16 mpg to 18 mpg (My first trip over the Cascade mountains and back was over 18 mpg). I agree the milage is proportional to the grin.
I took a trip to southern Cal this last spring break and had one tank of 13.5 mpg from Sacramento to LA. But then my average speed was was better than 75 mph. (that open road drivng is fun).... I'll take that milage...
cnreng, mine is about like yours. Stop and go traffic really kills the milage. Mine hasn't seen a stricly highway trip yet. Almost 20k on it now. Best milage was 16.5.

We have put about 26K on our 2002 since October. Since it had 10K on it, it has been very steady at 15-16 around town and back an forth to work---Mixed driving with little interstate.
I have put tank after tank in it on the road 700 - 800 miles or so at a time and about 17 is the best, but I do grin A LOT! I am talking 80s popping up to 90 some of the time, 730 miles in 10 1/2 hours with family, very short stops and 3 drivers. And no we do not shut if off at all.
Yep you can get 20 tops but no grin and add two hours to trip.
I do think that will change with exhaust, micro programmer and modified intake.
I have even strongly considered the Gear Vendors unit, 85 MPH at 1870 RPM, does anyone know of any documentation on the economy increase if any for an empty truck, (no trailer 9400#)?

What the heck are you guys doing to achieve this? My Excursion has shown a steady downward trend over time (granted, I have a heavy foot, I leave it at high idle 2-6 hours per tankful sometimes, etc.), and the ex-wife's Ex only did 16.5, rarely more or less. Mine's got 48k, and hers (which I inherit back next week) has 24k.
I'm a volunteer firefighter/EMT, and I let the AIC do the charge protect thing while I'm out on EMS calls. Before I got laid off, I had this crazy habit of always going for fuel on Friday evening, then getting slammed with three runs before Saturday noon. Usually it's 30 minutes of high idle for each run.
Well I would say that the high-idle might have something to do with it. I usually lose about a tenth everytime I idle mine to cool off before shutdown, and that's usually only about 3-4 minutes (unless I'm towing)
Just my .02

Ptemplin
I did leave out one detail but I do not think if makes that much difference.
I do use about a pint per 35 gal of Rotella DFA almost every tank.
Sam's has it now and a case has lasted several months.
I fill two one quart plastic oil bottles and put them in a bag next to the jack under the blower, they just fit and I am set for 4 tanks, good for most of my trips. Durring cold snaps I just put the full quart in and don't worry if I can not plug it in.

We did between 16-18.+ mpg all the way from Sacramento,CA to Phoenix thru Las Cruces New Mexico,El Paso Texas ending here in Dallas about 1,800 miles total and pulling about a 7,000 pound trailer all in three tankfuls. We now have 3,300 miles on the new X.
Average speed was about 65 mph,I'm assuming my mileage was right on track.
Our 99 F250 PSD 4x4 did about the same mileage when we bought it new in June 99,and that first run took us from Sacramento,CA to Salt Lake City to Twin Falls Idaho and back to Sac.

Yes, it takes *at least* 10,000 miles to break-in your engine as mentioned. The first 1,500 miles or so on our Excursion was a roadtrip from Houston to Florida down I-10 (real flat). I was varying the speed as you were to ensure proper break-in. What was amazing is that I kept the computer on MPG setting and we constantly got better and better mileage. It was a good way of judging mileage since the terrain was basically constant to and from Florida.
You should also see an immediate improvement after your first oil change. The first 2 oil changes seemed to add improvement to my overall MPG.
You WILL notice a engine idle sound difference over the next 10,000 miles as the engine settles down and gets quieter (plus, your brain switches on it's *selective hearing* filters so that you notice only out-of-the-ordinary sounds).
I added a Hypertech PPIII and got about 2 miles per gallon increase in mileage whether city or highway...plus the extra POWER! Yeah, baby! Good luck, and don't worry about the mileage until you hit about 15,000.
Hey X owners, I am in the market for a 2003 X and am curious if you know what has been done to the 2003 X? I am in the Vegas area.
