Front and rear spring swap completed

Finally got around to swapping X code fronts and B code rears with 4" blocks on the Excursion this weekend. It would have been an exceedingly easy job except the fact that we also decided to do a polyurethane bushing swap at the same time. We had already replaced the bushings on the new springs so all that was left to do was the spring shackles and track bar and front sway bar bushings. They were a major pain to get done and took a long long time to do without having a good hydraulic press to press out the old bushings.

Right now the truck is back on the ground. Just need to torque all of the bolts down and take it to the alignment shop. We didn't have time to install the helwig sway bar, maybe next weekend. I'll try to get pics up after I can get a chance to clean her up so she is presentable for you guys.

The only problems we ran into other than the bushings were getting the front spring eye bolt from the passenger side rear. The rear ac and heater lines got in the way so we unscrewed the hold downs on the lines and nudged them out of the way. It also helps a lot to have at least two or preferably three people the help persuade the rear springs into place.

If somebody could do me a huge favor and find me the torque specs for the rear U-bolts, and spring and shackle bolts, I would really really appreciate it. My PC at home is down and I don't have any other access to a dvd drive to look up the specs myself.

If anybody has any questions about my experience please let me know and I'll do my best to help out.

I am coming by your place and you can do mine up with X springs and 4" blocks

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Louie, it would have been just a two or three hour job at the most without swapping out the bushings. If it weren't starting to get so chilly outside I would tell you to come right over some weekend.

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

If you want to, you can stop by my studio on Smithville Road and use one of our computers to run the services DVD and look up the specs. We will be in from 7:30 till about 1:30.

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Thanks, I did get my computer back up and running and got all of the torque specs. The ride is soo much better now. No more bottoming out when hitting even the smallest bumps. Didn't get the swaybar installed yet, nor have we replaced the shocks so it is only going to get better from here.

When and where is the next FOKISD get together? I tried to get to the website but it seems like it is down as of right now.

Just tried the web site and its just fine. Click on the events page for next month. Nothing like 30-35 SD owners getting together!! I am always the one at the get togethers asking everyone to get more Ex's to show up.

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

I haven't been able to get pics yet because of weather and also the fact that I can't get ahold of a digital camera right now. I will look for the part numbers in a few minutes.

It rained today and on my way to work I did notice at least one down side to the 350 rear springs. I was pulling out of a shopping center and turning left. I gave it a little too much right foot and the rear tires started to spin. When that happened I also got wheel hop. I guess the snubber spring did do some good after all because I never had a problem with wheel hop before when spinning the tires. I am hoping that when we install the helwig rear swaybar this weekend that it will help at least a little bit. If not it will be time to look into a set of Landyacht's radius rods.

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Did you already have the springs or did you have to buy them. I am getting ready to do the exact same thing to my 250. If you don't mind, where did you get the springs and how much were your parts. I have access to a lift and hopefully that will make the job a little easier. By the way, the next FOKISD meeting is Nov. 7th at the Red Robin in Milford at 1:00 P.M. I went to my first meeting which was the campout, what a great group of folks. Well when I go to do my springs, maybe I'll have to pick your brain if you don't mind. we'll talk at ya later. Thanks in advance. Chris

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

I am having trouble finding all of the receipts. The springs and new U-bolts were bought from Ford. With about a 25% discount the rear springs ran about $125.

I am going to try to come to the Milford get together, but I am not sure what I have going on that weekend.

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Rick with FOKISD is working on a deal on X springs for me. He still wants me to do a 4" lift but then it will not fit in the garage! So "I think" I will go with X springs and Edge mini spring pack up front and 4" blocks in the rear. We could do our lift at the same time on the lift you have access too. Maybe a deal on 2 of everything from Rick??

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Louie, aren't X springs and an edge spring pack in front going to make you a little bit high in the front with only 4"blocks in the rear?

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

I just put on real heavy Ranch Hand bumpers and I think it will be ok! If it is still nose high I can go with 5" blocks in the rear and hope it will still fit in the garage??

Re: Front and rear spring swap completed

Bella if you need to know the weight of the full replacement Ranch Hand for the front it should be 250 lbs(give or take a few) or about 175 more than the stock steel one.

The rear bumper I can't account for yet as I haven't installed the rear replacement which will come early next year.
