Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

I would like to hear comments on what drivers have actually experienced regarding fuel consumption. Thanks

Skeena - a warm WELCOME to the site!

I average 16 MPG in 50/50 city/highway driving unloaded.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

Skeena, just passed 1700 miles on my X with 17.2 MPG average since new. I don't dip into the turbo much and 65 MPH on the highway. Probably 70/30 split on city/hwy.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

Two roadtrips ago I got 18 mpg at 70 mph with a PPIII, Rotella oil and about 6000 miles on the truck.

Last week coming back from South Carolina, I got just a little over 20 mpg at 72 mph on relatively flat roads with the same PPIII, a boost tube, a brand new Motorcraft air filter and Mobil Delvac 1300 Super oil. (The computer said I was getting 32 mpg!!) The truck turned 10,000 miles on the drive back. I've never towed anything heavier than a pair of Sea-Doos.

I'm not sure if the boost tube or the oil made the difference, but I am definitely happy with that mileage.

I'm eager to see if my city mileage will go up any.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

I don't get it! My wife is the primary driver of our X, she drives verryy easy, we never tow anything, and we get combined city/highway, probably about 60/40, of around 12 mpg. I have manually verified the old fashioned way and it is correct. I read of the mileage some of you get and wonder what is wrong with my engine (I replaced the fuel filter, no help). Any ideas?

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

My PPIII was the biggest help.

My mileage is usually about 14.5 in town.

If you're using Rotella, try something different. You never know what might help.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I replaced the stock muffler with a 3.5 inch straight through design.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

Thanks everyone for the responses - it will be interesting to see a trend line develop and what difference, if any, will become apparent when one uses synthetic oil or aftermarket components.
Cheers!

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

I've recently joined since I am the owner (PROUD) of a 2001 Limited 4x2. I'm averaging about 19-20 on the highway @ 65 and intown 17-18. Just under 2000 miles thus far. Have experienced no problems todate. Did install a K&N air filter and a bug deflector. Otherwise its stock. Looking at a chip and gauges in the future. it does ride very nicely. Sorta like a Lazyboy on wheels!

Skeena, just passed 2800 miles on my X with 18.41 MPG average since new. I don't dip into the turbo much and 65 MPH on the highway. Probably 70/30 split on city/hwy. I fill it to the lip everytime. Just filled it up today at Flying J and got 863 miles out of my last tank. Each tank has done better! Hopeing to break the 900 mile limit soon! Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

Skeena - Welcome to a great site. For your information, the Excursion with the Power Stroke is only available with the 3.73 gear rear end. The only option for the rear end is the limited slip or not.

Have a great day,
John

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

On a recent trip to Jacksonville, Florida from Houston the buggy got 20.2 going and 19.1 coming back. I was in a little more of a hurry coming back to Houston and had a slight head wind. The only mod so far was installing a K&N air filter. The best with the stock filter was 18.5 on the highway.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

My X is just about 10K. Bone stock. I drive it to and from work, about 30 miles (hwy) each way. I don't tow anything but haul the wife and a Great Dane with me to work. I average about 15-16mpg at 75-80mph with occassional WFO's.

I also take many over-eager commuters to "diesel school" whether it be from a light or from a roll. I've also been using the A/C quite a bit lately (who hasn't?).

Now, I figure that if I didn't get above 2k on the tach, and reduced wind drag by keeping Oscar's (the dog's) big head in the widow, I could probably improve MPG.

But I'm having too much fun...

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

You can pick up an instant 1-2 mpg just by verifying your odometer and trip computer

With the 33s I used to run, my odo read 2.4% low (because 33s are taller than stock tires). And my trip computer showed fuel mileage 7.5% lower than reality. So my real mileage was 9% better!

Now I'm running 35s and I'll bet real mileage has gone down a little bit with the bigger tires, but the odo and trip computer will read even lower than reality.

Bottom line, you need to fully top up and calculate mileage yourself over several tanks full to get a true reading. Lots of other guys say their trip computer reads low too.

Re: Fuel consumption with 3.73 diff - comments!

14-16 mpg mixed driving
18-19 at 70mph
19-21 at 55mph
10-12 towing 9,200 lb TT

mods that might affect mpg:

Hypertech PPIII
Dynomax race muffler

The PPIII seemed to help a little, but the mpg improved more significantly when I installed the Dynomax. That improved the towing by 1.5 mpg on same roads, load and weather.
